The legal profession, the organisations we support and the communities we serve all continue to evolve. So it's important that the way we attract, develop and support future talent evolves too.

📚 What are you reading or watching right now?

Building your future career is important, but so is making time for the things you enjoy.

Whether it’s a book you can’t put down, a boxset you’ve binged in a weekend or a podcast that’s introduced you to a new perspective, taking time to switch off can help you recharge, stay curious and maintain a healthy balance alongside your studies or career goals.

At Shoosmiths, our offices have a Book Club station, where colleagues can borrow and share books with one another. The shelves include recommendations from our inclusion networks, as well as titles covering topics such as careers, leadership, women in law, Pride, social mobility and personal development, alongside plenty of fiction and feel-good reads.

And if you visit our Edinburgh office, you’ll find something a little different. Alongside the books is a collection of classic comics, celebrating Scotland’s rich publishing heritage. It’s a fitting touch given that some of our meeting rooms are named after iconic favourites including The Beano, The Dandy and Oor Wullie.

After all, some of the best learning happens outside the classroom, lecture theatre or office. 📖✨

☀️ What if your training contract helped power a community's transition to clean energy?

As part of their development programme, Shoosmiths trainees in Leeds partnered with Clean Energy Leeds, a community organisation installing solar panels on local buildings. Working on a pro bono basis, trainees provided practical legal support on corporate structures, Site Access Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding, helping the organisation move its projects from idea to reality.

The impact goes far beyond the legal documents. These projects will help reduce energy costs for community buildings, lower carbon emissions across Leeds and give local organisations the confidence to expand their plans further.

For aspiring solicitors, it's a great example of what a legal career can offer. You'll build commercial awareness, client management skills and confidence in delivering practical advice, while using your legal expertise to create meaningful change in communities. ⚖️🌱

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important consideration for businesses, investors and regulators.

Lawyers are often at the centre of these conversations, helping organisations navigate environmental regulations, manage climate-related risks and respond to changing stakeholder expectations.

For aspiring solicitors, understanding sustainability isn't just about protecting the planet. It's about understanding one of the biggest issues shaping business decisions today and the legal challenges that come with it.

A group of students recently joined us at our London office alongside our client Virgin Media O2 for a day designed to answer exactly that question.

From sixth form students to graduates, participants heard from partners, trainee solicitors, business development professionals and in-house lawyers, gaining a practical insight into life in the legal profession and the many routes into it.

One of the day's highlights was The Great Cake Debate 🍰. Working in teams, students tackled a real commercial dispute, researched the issues, built legal arguments and presented their case in a lively debate. It was a chance to develop the same skills lawyers use every day: critical thinking, communication, teamwork and commercial awareness.

But one of the biggest takeaways wasn't about legal knowledge.

Success in law relies on much more than understanding legislation and case law. Through networking sessions, panel discussions and conversations with professionals across Shoosmiths and Virgin Media O2, students explored the importance of curiosity, relationship-building, confidence and understanding how businesses operate.

They also discovered that there is no single route into the profession. Whether you're considering university, a solicitor apprenticeship, work experience or a training contract in the future, every career journey is different.

Events like this matter because they offer something that can't always be found online: real conversations with people working in the profession today. Students asked questions, expanded their networks, toured our office and gained a better understanding of both the legal and commercial sides of working in a law firm.

The feedback was incredibly positive, with many students leaving feeling more confident and inspired about their future careers.

You don't need to have your entire career mapped out today. The important thing is to keep exploring, asking questions and being open to opportunities when they come your way. 🚀

While conversations about the future of law often focus on technology, some of the most valuable skills remain distinctly human.

-Building trust.
-Understanding people.
-Navigating complexity.
-Asking better questions.
-Exercising judgement when there isn't a straightforward answer.

As technology takes on more routine tasks, these skills may become even more important.

That's why developing future lawyers isn't simply about teaching legal knowledge. It's about helping people build the confidence, curiosity and commercial mindset needed to succeed in a changing world.

⚖️ Meet Sufian.

Sufian joined Shoosmiths as a trainee solicitor in September 2025 and has already experienced two very different areas of law. After completing his first seat in Corporate, where he worked on matters including mergers, acquisitions and company law issues, he's now gaining experience in Dispute Resolution & Litigation. In September, he'll move into his third seat, continuing to broaden his legal and commercial expertise.

Having completed a First-Class Honours Law degree and the SQE before joining the firm, Sufian also brought valuable commercial experience from the real estate sector. Away from the office, he's passionate about fitness and enjoys both motorcycling and horse riding.

It's a great example of how a training contract provides exposure to a range of practice areas, helping trainees build the skills and experience needed for a successful legal career. 🌟
