NHS falls into line with ruling on s*x
NHS England will implement new guidelines requiring hospitals to accommodate patients based on their biological s*x, reversing a previous policy that respected gender identity. This follows a Supreme Court ruling 18 months ago stating that ‘woman’ and ‘s*x’ in the Equality Act 2010 refer to biological s*x. Critics argue the old policy endangered women. The new rules apply to all single-s*x spaces, including wards and toilets.

Indefinite sentences quashed for two men
Two men, Luke Ings and Liam Bennett, have been released from indefinite sentences after serving nearly 20 years in custody. A high court judge and magistrate reviewed their cases, quashing their original sentences. Ings and Bennett were initially classified as dangerous offenders for crimes committed as teenagers. The Criminal Cases Review Commission referred their cases back for review, leading to new sentences of four years and 42 months, respectively.

Could Someone Take Over Your Practice Tomorrow?

Here’s a simple test for any sole practitioner.

Imagine that, tomorrow morning, someone else has to take over your practice.

Not permanently.

Just long enough to protect your clients, your business and your family while everything is sorted out.

Could they?

Would they know:

where everything is;

who your clients are;

what needs immediate attention;

how to access the information they are legally entitled to access;

what insurance you have;

what professional obligations apply;

who needs to be contacted;

and what your wishes are?

If the answer is “I’m not sure”, that may be the most important business-planning exercise you undertake this year.

A will is essential.

But for many professional practices, it may only be the beginning.

The question isn’t simply:

“What happens to my assets when I die?”

It is:

“What happens to everything I am professionally responsible for if I am suddenly not there?”

That is a conversation worth having.

Barristers reveal justice system failings
A Bar Council survey shows that 63% of barristers believe the public lacks acceptable access to justice, primarily due to court delays. Over 2,700 barristers participated, with 62% citing delays as the main issue. Other concerns included inadequate legal aid funding (55%) and poor court infrastructure (24%). A lawyer commented: “Our justice system is broken. There are no votes in funding court services or legal aid, because most members of the general public have no idea of how important an effective, ethical and independent justice system is to their everyday

10 Questions Every Sole Practitioner Should Ask

If you run your own professional practice, ask yourself:

1. Who would deal with my clients if I suddenly couldn’t work?

2. Who knows where my client records are?

3. Who knows which matters are urgent?

4. Who knows what insurance policies I have?

5. Who could access my business accounts?

6. What happens to my email and digital records?

7. Who knows about my regulatory obligations?

8. What happens to employees or contractors?

9. What happens to my premises, equipment and subscriptions?

10. Does my ordinary will actually fit with the arrangements I’ve made for my business?

If you can’t answer those questions, you may have identified a gap in your planning.

And that gap isn’t necessarily solved by having a will.

It may require a professional practice continuity plan.
