Tomorrow, Thursday 9th February, we will be supporting the Isle of Wight Youth Trust and their campaign to `Banish the Blues`. Now, more than ever before, children and young people on the Isle of Wight are reaching out to the Youth Trust for support with their mental health and wellbeing.

NHS research now shows 1 in 6 children under 16, and 1 in 4 young people aged 17-25 need support with their mental health.

So what are we asking? We are asking you to avoid wearing blue, wear bright colours and make a donation - whatever you can afford.

For free information sessions on key mental health and wellbeing topics for parents and carers or to donate: https://www.iowyouthtrust.co.uk/get-support/im-a-parent-carer/parent-support-sessions/

History

The name Pittis has long been known on the Isle of Wight. Richard Pittis, the son of Thomas Pittis was born in 1788. His father was a miller and grocer and in turn Richard carried on the business in Newport. He married Mary Seymour and they had four sons. His second son also named Richard Pittis, married Amelia Roach in 1845 and they had six children, the third of whom was named Richard Roach Pittis born in January 1852.

Richard Pittis purchased the site of the offices at 64 Lugley Street, Newport & also Lugley House in July 1848. Richard Roach Pittis was very much a man of his town and in 1868 when aged 16 he was articled to his Uncle Mr James Alfred Pittis who practised as a solicitor. By the age of 21 in 1873 having served his articles and qualified as a solicitor Richard Roach Pittis immediately started his own practise in offices at Lower St James Street Newport. On 26 June 1880 Richard Roach Pittis purchased the stable and coachouse on the site of what is now 64 Lugley Street. Following a great deal of building work, he moved into his new offices within a year of purchasing the site.

Richard married in August 1881, but the marriage was not long lasting and resulted in a divorce in 1886. Richard Roach Pittis was a sound lawyer in every sense of the term. He won the confidence of his clients and had considerable contacts in the local business and commercial world. He built up what was to be the largest and most influential legal practise on the Island. He was prominent in the promotion and incorporation of many local and island trading companies acting as a solicitor to many of them. He was one of the founders and first directors of the IW County Press Newspaper plus others well know companies at the time.

Richard Roach Pittis married for a second time in 1909, acquired from the family estate Lugley House, and lived there until his death in 1913. Following his death the practice was purchased by Alexander Young Young-James, who named the practise `Roach Pittis & Co`.
