Summer always brings a wave of urgent will enquiries and I get it.

You’re heading off on holiday and suddenly the “what if” thoughts creep in.

I’ll always find a way to turn things around quickly when travel is the trigger. But here’s my honest advice: Where possible, it’s always better to sort this before the panic sets in - whether that’s an upcoming trip, a health concern, or just life catching up with you.

I remember thinking about my own planning when I took this photo - what would happen if something happened to all of us at once?

Most couples leave everything to oneanother, then to their children - sensible. But it’s worth asking your solicitor to test that will against the unlikely scenario too.

Has it been checked to see what would apply if you didn’t survive each other?

Granted, it’s not a cheerful thing to think about before a holiday. But five minutes checking now beats uncertainty for the people you love later.

🐾 Meet Milo - officially my best behaved child.

He’s also the reason I’m writing this post because most of us have never actually planned for what happens to them if we’re not around.

Here are 3 real UK pet-and-wills stories that show just how seriously (and sometimes chaotically) this can go:

1️⃣ The fashion icon’s dogs. Alexander McQueen left £50,000 in trust for the lifelong care of his three dogs, plus £100,000 each to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and the Blue Cross. Proper planning, properly done.

2️⃣ The parrot dispute. In a real English court case (Re McLean), a woman’s son claimed his mother wanted him to inherit her estate so he could look after her parrot and jenday parakeet. His late father’s other children challenged it in court. Even a parrot can end up at the centre of a legal battle.

3️⃣ The myth everyone believes. You legally CANNOT leave money directly to a pet. In the eyes of the law they’re property, not a person. What you can do is set up a trust or leave funds to a named person specifically for your pet’s care. Most people don’t know this until it’s too late.

Nine Years a Solicitor 🎉

A little late (I was too busy celebrating my birthday weekend to notice the date go by!) but on 1st August, I quietly clocked up nine years since I qualified as a solicitor.

It wasn’t a straightforward path. I did things in a different order to most - I had two of my three children before I qualified, which meant juggling exams, training and toddlers which was hard going at times, but it taught me more about resilience, time management and knowing what I actually wanted from my career than any textbook could.

Here’s to the last nine years, the late nights, the exams, the small people who came first, and the clients who’ve trusted me with the things closest to their hearts.

I hear this all the time.

Couples assume everything will automatically pass to the other person — and sometimes, yes, it does!

But what people don’t realise is:

• That only works in very specific circumstances

• It doesn’t protect your share long term

• And it definitely doesn’t cover things like remarriage, care fees, or family fallouts

I’ve seen situations where:

• Children unintentionally lose out

• Assets end up somewhere completely different to what was intended

• Families are left dealing with stress that could have been avoided
