When the cost of living is all over the news, estate planning is usually the last thing on anyone's mind.

I understand that. Completely.

But in 25 years of working with families and business owners, I have learned something that rarely makes the headlines:

The families who struggle most after a bereavement, a health crisis, or an unexpected business event are almost never the ones who couldn't afford to plan. They are the ones who kept putting it off until the moment passed.

A Will review. A Lasting Power of Attorney. A succession plan for the business. These are not luxury items for when times are good. They are the foundations that hold everything together when times get hard.

If financial pressure has pushed your planning to the back of the list, I would genuinely encourage you to bring it forward. A conversation costs nothing. The consequences of not having one can cost everything.

Most people with overseas property assume their UK Will covers everything.

It usually does not.

Different countries have completely different inheritance laws, probate requirements, and tax rules.

Without the right legal coordination across each jurisdiction, an estate can be frozen for years, leaving families dealing with foreign legal systems, unexpected costs, and avoidable conflict at the worst possible time.

Swipe through our latest carousel to see what unplanned cross-border estates actually look like, and what proper strategic planning can do instead.

If your estate involves assets, property, or family ties outside the UK, now is the right time to get the right advice.

Have you seen the news about the £5.7bn takeover bid for easyJet?

It’s a huge story in the business world right now, but it highlights a lesson that applies to every single business owner, no matter the size of the company.

Opportunities rarely arrive with perfect timing.

Most business owners I speak to think about succession planning only when they are ready to exit or retire. But waiting until the end is often too late.

A successful business handover, whether you are selling up or passing it down to your family, isn’t just about finding the right buyer.

It’s about being completely prepared before the opportunity even knocks on your door.

A proper succession and estate plan gives you control. It gives you options.

And most importantly, it ensures that the legacy you have worked so hard to build continues exactly the way you intended, protecting your family’s future in the process.

At DLS Estate Planning, we always see the difference early preparation makes. The families and business owners who plan ahead are the ones who can make huge decisions from a place of opportunity rather than urgency.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. If the right opportunity arrived for your business tomorrow, would your affairs be ready?

Most people think writing a Will is just about filling in a form.

It isn't.

It is one of the most personal decisions you will ever make and the way it is handled can either bring your family together or quietly pull them apart.

I have seen it go both ways.

The difference is almost never the legal expertise.

It is whether the person sitting across the table actually listened.

Whether they asked the right questions.

Whether they understood that behind every name on that document is a relationship, a history, and a reason.

At DLS, we believe your Will deserves more than a template. It deserves a conversation.

When the economy feels unpredictable, people stop planning for the future. And that’s exactly when mistakes happen.

Yesterday, the financial markets reacted positively to the new government’s commitment to economic stability.

You might be thinking: What does that have to do with me?

Actually, everything.

Most of us don't spend our days watching the stock market or checking borrowing rates. But we all feel the effects of confidence or the lack of it.

In my 25 years of estate planning, I’ve noticed a clear pattern. When the economic outlook feels uncertain, people freeze.

They put off writing their Will. They delay sorting out their business succession. They hesitate to make decisions about their family’s wealth because they are waiting to see "what happens next."

But stability is what gives us the confidence to move forward.

When things feel predictable, it becomes so much easier to make decisions that protect your family, grow your business, and secure your legacy.

Let’s hope this week’s positive market reaction is the start of the stability we all need to start planning ahead again.

Another probate fee increase. Another reminder that poor planning always costs more.

If you are ever asked to be an executor for a loved one, you are already taking on a huge responsibility during a heartbreaking time.

Now, the government is making it more expensive.

From July 2026, the fee just to apply for probate is jumping from £300 to £526, a massive 75% increase.

What many people don't realise is that executors often have to pay this fee out of their own pocket before they are allowed to access the deceased person's bank accounts to get the money back.

It shouldn't be this hard for grieving families.

The best thing you can do for your family right now is to ensure your estate is properly planned, your Will is up to date, and your assets are clearly documented. Good preparation is the only way to protect your loved ones from unnecessary costs and delays.

If you're worried about what you're leaving behind for your family to sort out, send us a message. We can help make sure they are protected.

If you own anything outside the UK, a property, an investment, a bank account, this is worth reading before you scroll past it.

Most people assume their UK will covers everything they own.
It doesn't.

The moment your assets cross a border, you're no longer dealing with one legal system. You're dealing with two, sometimes more.

Spain has forced heirship rules that can override your will completely.
France requires a set portion to pass to your children, regardless of what you intended.

Some countries won't recognise a UK grant of probate at all without a separate process opening in their own courts.

I've watched families discover this at the worst possible time, already grieving, and suddenly facing a legal process in another country, in a language they don't speak, with rules nobody explained to them in advance.

None of it was inevitable.

Every one of these situations was preventable with the right coordination from the start.

The estates that transfer smoothly aren't the simplest ones.

They're the ones where someone made sure the UK side and the overseas side were actually working together, not creating conflict.

If your family has assets in more than one country, this conversation is worth having now, not after something happens.

Let me be honest about something most people only discover when it's too late to change.

Probate is harder than anyone tells you.

Not because the process is impossible.

Because nobody prepares you for what being an executor actually involves, until you're already in the middle of it.

Legal duties most people have never heard of.

Strict timelines that don't pause for grief.

Financial institutions that ask for documents nobody thought to gather.

A family expecting resolution in weeks, while the legal process takes months.
And the quiet, persistent fear of getting something wrong.

Of missing something important.

Of being held personally responsible for a mistake you didn't even know you were making.

I've sat with executors who were brilliant, capable people, completely overwhelmed.

Not because probate defeated them.

Because they were trying to navigate it alone.

Here's what changes when you have the right support:

You know exactly what to do first.

You have realistic timelines you can actually communicate to your family.

You catch potential complications before they become expensive problems.

And you have someone alongside you who understands, not just the legal side but the human side of what you're carrying.

Probate doesn't have to be the thing that breaks a family during an already heartbreaking time.

With the right support, it becomes manageable.

One step at a time. In the right order. With complete confidence that everything is being handled correctly.

A business owner worked for 25 years to build something worth leaving behind.

One year of late payments quietly dismantled it. This is more common than you think.

The UK government has just introduced the Commercial Payments Bill, new legislation designed to crack down on the companies that consistently pay small businesses late, costing the economy £11 billion every single year.

And while that number sounds like a policy issue, I want to talk about what it actually means at the kitchen table.

When invoices go unpaid, the stress does not stay in the office. It comes home. It eats into personal savings used as business buffers. It delays the retirement plan. It puts pressure on personal guarantees that were signed years ago and long forgotten.

And slowly, quietly, it weakens the estate that was supposed to take care of the people you love most.

Most families do not realise this is happening until it is too late to fix it.

This Bill is welcome news. But regulation does not replace a properly structured estate. It does not protect your family from the months before enforcement kicks in. And it does not answer the question every business-owning family should be asking right now:

If the money stopped coming in tomorrow, how long could your family hold on and what would still be left for them?

If that question makes you uncomfortable, it is worth a conversation.

Drop a comment below or send us a message. We work with business owners every day to make sure what they build actually reaches the people it was always meant for.

When homebuyers hesitate, pay attention.

Not just to the property market.

To everything it's telling you underneath the surface.

Reuters reported this week that UK house prices are expected to rise more slowly than previously forecast. London is seeing a slight decline. Higher borrowing costs are keeping buyers on the sidelines.

The headlines frame it as a property story.
I think it's something much more significant.
Because when borrowing costs remain high, households don't just pause on buying homes.

They pause on everything.

Major financial decisions get delayed.

Spending habits quietly change.

Long-term planning conversations, the ones that were always meant to happen, get pushed back again.

"We'll sort it when things settle down."

I hear that more than almost anything else right now.

And here's what I want to say to every family reading this:

Things rarely settle down on schedule.

The economic environment has a way of replacing one uncertainty with another.

And the families who find themselves best protected, not just financially, but legally and structurally, are never the ones who waited for the perfect moment.

They're the ones who paid attention to these signals and made decisions while they still had the space to make them thoughtfully.

Not reactively. Not under pressure.

Deliberately.

The housing slowdown isn't just about property prices.

It's a window into how millions of people are feeling about their financial future right now.

And if that feeling is prompting you to pause on important decisions, it might be worth asking whether pausing is actually protecting you.

Or simply delaying the inevitable.

💬 Is the housing slowdown primarily a property issue, or is it a warning sign of broader economic caution across the UK? I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts.
