A word of caution before the 13th.

I know several of you are weighing up whether to rush a probate application through to catch the current £300 fee before it rises to £526.

Here's my honest advice: only do it if the application is genuinely ready. If there's inheritance tax to report, HMRC generally needs that position confirmed first, sometimes even paid, before the application can properly proceed.

I've seen estates that looked manageable on the surface turn up a lifetime gift or a joint account nobody remembered. Rushing an incomplete application to save £226 can cost far more in delays if the Probate Registry stops it.

The saving is real. It's just not worth chasing at the expense of getting it right.

In four days, the cost of applying for probate in England and Wales rises by 75%.

From 13 July 2026, the standard probate application fee increases from £300 to £526, confirmed by the Ministry of Justice, subject to parliamentary approval.

If you're currently administering an estate and the paperwork is ready, submitting before the 13th could save £226.
