People of Oldham - Did you work at Platt Brothers?

For generations, Platt Brothers was at the heart of Oldham's industrial history. At the height of the organisation, the company employed more than 15,000 people, with its huge New Hartford Works in Werneth, operating as a major centre of textile machinery manufacturing. Platts began in 1770 when Henry Platt was manufacturing carding equipment in Dobcross.

Platt International was formed in 1970 from the textile division of Stone Platt, and it acquired the S**o Lowell Corporation in 1973 and became Platt-S**o-Lowell in 1975. The Oldham premises closed in the early 1980s.

Thousands of people worked in engineering, foundries, metalworking and machinery manufacturing.

But what was it really like to work there? Was there more to working there than just hard work?

Many former industrial workers spent years exposed to loud machinery, metal dust, industrial processes and potentially hazardous working environments.

How do I know if my hearing loss is linked to my old job?

Typical signs include struggling to follow conversations in busy rooms, needing the television louder than everyone else in the house, regularly asking people to repeat themselves, and tinnitus, which is a persistent ringing, buzzing or hissing in the ears.

A hearing test can help separate noise damage from natural age-related change, because noise tends to leave a distinctive dip in the results at certain frequencies. What are the steps in a hearing loss claim?

A claim is less daunting than most people expect, because almost all of the work is handled for you. With WE Solicitors the process looks like this:
