People put this off because it feels morbid. I understand that. I've had the conversation a thousand times.

But writing down who looks after your dog isn't planning for your death. It's planning for their life.

There's a difference, and it matters.

Four things worth naming, and most people miss at least two.

Who takes them. Not "someone will" — an actual person who has agreed to it.

What they eat, and what they can't. The allergy nobody else knows about.

Which vet, and whether there's a balance owing.

The small things. The word that means dinner. The side of the bed. Whether they're frightened of the hoover.

That last one sounds trivial. It isn't. It's the difference between a dog who copes and a dog who doesn't.

The kids go back this week. The office fills up again. The house that was full all summer is suddenly empty by half eight.

Pets notice. Dogs especially. A routine that shifted overnight is one of the most common causes of separation anxiety, and September is when it lands.

Most of them settle in a fortnight.

But it's worth asking the bigger version of the question. If a change to the school run unsettles them, what happens if the change is permanent and nobody has written anything down?
