Divorcing a narcissist doesn’t always mean the control ends.

When you share children, the behaviour can simply change. Guilt. Emotional pressure. Manipulating your child’s loyalties. Undermining you as a parent. Making the children feel responsible for their emotions. Using child arrangements or communication as another way to maintain control.

Sometimes the relationship is over, but the emotional manipulation continues through the children.

This is where getting the right legal advice can really help.

But what happens when parents don’t agree on what comes next? Who gets the final say — and how much say should your child have?

Parental responsibility plays an important role in major decisions about a child’s future, but your child’s views and feelings matter too. As they get older and more mature, it’s important that they’re listened to and have a say in decisions affecting their future.

Sole parental responsibility vs shared parental responsibility — do you know the difference?

Having parental responsibility can give you important rights and responsibilities when it comes to decisions about your child — from education and medical treatment to travel, name changes and other significant decisions about their upbringing.

But parental responsibility and how a child's time is divided between parents are not the same thing. A 50/50 care arrangement doesn't necessarily mean the legal decision-making position is 50/50.
