This Wednesday, the 15th of April, marked International Wellness Day, an occasion which shines a light on the importance of accessible and inclusive wellness practices for the good of the global community.

Established by the United Nations, International Wellness Day aims to promote the overall health and well-being of communities worldwide, encouraging us to reflect on our lifestyles in a bid to maintain good physical, mental, and emotional health.

With daily life becoming ever more fast-paced, and technology making it nearly impossible to disconnect, it has become more important than ever to prioritise moments of rest and reflection. The good news is that there is no shortage of wellness activities and resources available to support healthier habits and long-term wellbeing. In fact, the wellness industry is worth over an astonishing 6.7 trillion US Dollars!

One of the biggest players in the wellness industry is Lululemon, a widely known athletic apparel brand that generated approximately 11.1 billion US Dollars in global revenue last year alone.

The company’s IP portfolio is ever-growing, complemented by substantive efforts to protect itself from copycat manufacturing. In late 2025, the brand registered the trademark ‘LULULEMON DUPE’ with the US Patent and Trademark Office, sparking conversation on the likelihood of the company using the term in actual brand marketing, or whether it will serve as more of a preemptive tactic against copycats and dupes.

The upturn in consumers seeking to purchase athletic-wear may have been influenced by increasing popularity of physical health overall. Statistics show that more and more people are engaging in fitness-related activities compared to previous years, and it's not just gym classes and running clubs that have grown in popularity.

With the help of technology, such as the mobile app 'SUBTERRA’, people can now access wellness activities straight from their homes. SUBTERRA filed an Intent-to-Use trademark application with the USPTO on March 29, 2026 for a word mark of the same name, covering downloadable mobile phone application software for guided meditation, mental wellness, and personal development.

Tell us your tips and tricks for maintaining your wellbeing in the comments below! 🧘‍♀️

Advancements to several IP systems have been implemented across the globe in recent months.

The USPTO, for one, has launched two new pilot program initiatives, one being a Streamlined Claim Set Pilot Program, and the other an Artificial Intelligence Search Automated Pilot (ASAP!) Program.

The Streamlined Claim Set Pilot Program was introduced on October 24, 2025, and allows for certain pending utility patent applications to be expedited for their first Office action, provided they meet the requirements.

The new AI Pilot Program for pre-examination utility application search was announced on October 8, 2025, and also aligns with the USPTO’s aim of improving examination quality, response time, and efficiency. The pilot program is aptly titled “Artificial Intelligence Search Automated Pilot (ASAP!)”, and will utilise the USPTO’s AI infrastructure to carry out pre-examination prior art searches.

Further, on March 1, 2026, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) enacted amendments to the Banjul Protocol on Marks and its Implementing Regulations.

The new legislation brings about several changes to the IP system of the region, including the introduction of a reduced period for refusal. As such, the refusal window has been decreased from nine months to six months, meaning that applications may be processed at a more expedited rate.

A clearer legislative framework has been introduced, providing transparency and more certainty for applicants. As such, applicants may now formally claim a six-month exhibition priority for trademarks which are displayed at recognised international exhibitions, and the opposition process now has an updated set of transmittal fees, clearer deadlines, and improved coordination with designated states.

Recent months have also seen the introduction of new Geographical Indication Rules (GI Rules) being implemented in

Myanmar, establishing an official route of GI protection under Myanmar’s Trademark Law 2019.

The recently introduced GI Rules set out a formal, detailed procedure for the registration and maintenance of GIs in the jurisdiction, as well as the process for oppositions, invalidations, and cancellations.

The Rules also allow applicants to apply for authorization to use their GI logo on products that meet the requirements, offering the opportunity for producers to protect multiple aspects of their IP at once.

Every year on the 23rd of March, the global community celebrates World Meteorological Day, an occasion established on the same day in 1950 by the World Meteorological Organization.

The annual event aims to shine a light on just how vital Meteorological and Hydrological Services are to the safety and wellbeing of societies across the world. So what is Meteorology exactly?

The term is used to describe the scientific study of the atmosphere, which includes how we understand, decipher, and analyse weather patterns, forecasting conditions, and even long-term climate behavior.

From predicting storms to tracking climate change, meteorologists help us make informed decisions that protect lives, agriculture, infrastructure, and economies, all of which underpin the stability of our lives.

The methods for observing and analysing meteorological data are vast, and often have hugely impressive inventions at play in the background to help gather the vital data needed to keep us safe.

One such outstanding set of innovations is Meteorological Satellites, which use multiple satellite imaging technologies to capture and transmit atmospheric data such as cloud formations, temperature, and moisture levels. This data can then be utilised to formulate weather predictions that are as accurate as possible.

Advanced Doppler radar systems are another vital, and highly technical, subset of innovations that are used to detect precipitation, wind speed, and storm movement, providing early warning signs of extreme weather such as hurricanes and tornadoes.

Doppler radar systems operate by transmitting short pulses of radio waves and registering signals that bounce back from a target, such as a raindrop, to the radar antenna. By measuring the changes in return signals, meteorologists can deduce if the targets are moving towards or away from the radar. This results in them being able to confirm whether a storm is coming towards a certain region, or whether it is moving away.

Interestingly, the technology behind Doppler radars is based on radar systems originally designed for use in World War II, and with the realisation that it could be highly useful for weather detection, the innovation was adopted into another field. By the 1990s, the US National Weather Service was utilising Doppler Radar coverage across most of the country.

Join us in celebrating World Meteorological Day by letting us know your favourite type of weather in the comments! ☔🌦️☀️

New IP Fee Schedules have been implemented in multiple jurisdictions across the globe in recent months, including Algeria, Brazil, Denmark, and Türkiye.

The Algerian National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI), for example, recently introduced a new IP fee schedule in relation to trademark and patent-related services.

As per the alterations implemented as of December 31, 2025, the fee for filing a trademark application has risen to 15,000 DZD for non-colour marks, and 16,000 DZD for marks with a colour claim.

Meanwhile, trademark renewal fees have increased to 20,000 DZD (without a colour claim) and 25,000 DZD (with a colour claim), whilst the fee for claiming priority of a trademark has increased to 5,000 DZD.

With regard to patents, the application filing fee now constitutes 15,000 DZD, and the publication fee comprises 10,000 DZD.

The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) finalised the implementation of a complete overhaul of its IP fee schedule on December 20, 2025.

The alterations to the previous fee structure were introduced in stages, with some new fees being implemented on August 7, 2025, and others on September 20, 2025. We previously reported on these fee changes here: https://ip-coster.com/news/new_fee_schedules_implemented_in_egypt_brazil_and_singapore/484

As of December 20, 2025, whilst the majority of new fees had already been implemented, the amended schedule abolished the fee associated with the issuance of the Letters Patent.

Other alterations introduced in December include changes to fees for specific IP procedures, such as obtaining official paper copies for claiming union priority for all IP types, the annotation of limitation or encumbrance for industrial designs, withdrawal of appeals and petitions for patents, and submitting documents to prove acquired distinctiveness for trademarks.

The Danish Patent and Trademark Office (DKPTO) implemented a new IP fee schedule with regard to patents, trademarks, designs, and utility models, as well as other IP types, as of January 1, 2026, introducing increases of 20% across the vast majority of fees. Whilst most changes have been implemented immediately, alterations to the renewal fees for all IP types are applicable at staggered stages through 2026.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) introduced a new IP fee schedule as of January 1, 2026, following its publication on December 31, 2025. The cost alterations apply to patents, utility models, trademarks, and industrial designs, and constitute an average increase of 22.5% across the board.

Today, the 20th of March, marks the wonderful occasion of the ✨ International Day of Happiness ✨

The global celebration, established by the United Nations and coordinated by Action for Happiness, a non-profit global movement, aims to pave the way towards “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples.”

The 2025 World Happiness Report, published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, showed that Finland was top of the happiness ranks for the eighth year in a row, with other Nordic countries joining it among the countries with the highest reported happiness levels.

Reports also show that a substantial factor in one's happiness is the sense of community around them, with household size being shown to be closely linked with happiness. The Happiness Report, for example, indicates that those living in a household of 4-5 people reported the highest levels of happiness in various parts of the world.

Whilst happiness levels in some countries are reported as high, it is important to recognise the need for change across the world to foster a healthier and happier global community amidst a multitude of social, economic, and environmental challenges.

One organisation that aims to help those across the globe is Start Network, putting community led innovation at the forefront of international change.

The initiative is designed to give communities across the world the chance to utilise space and resources to develop, test, adapt and scale their own ideas and innovations, allowing those at the heart of communities the ability to create what they know first-hand is needed to uplift the society they live in. One example of the Network’s global action is the Disasters & Emergencies Preparedness Programme, which provided flexible funding for national NGOs to develop effective humanitarian responses in emergency situations.

With community being a fundamental part of global happiness, we should all be committed to trying to help each other in whatever way we can.
