The UK government has just announced tougher rules for universities sponsoring international students, targeting visa abuse and non-genuine applicants. Institutions with high visa refusal rates, low enrolment, or poor course completion rates could face recruitment restrictions or even lose the right to sponsor international students. A new traffic-light rating system will be introduced from summer 2027 to monitor university performance. The changes come after student asylum claims fell by 30% over the past year following government action. Officials say genuine international students remain welcome, but the visa system must not be used as a route into asylum claims or illegal work. The government says these measures form part of wider immigration reforms aimed at strengthening control of the UK's borders.
