📆 Starting on Monday, we kicked off with the official Pro Bono Week UK event
🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Wednesday we held our inaugural, annual round table with the Community Legal Advice Clinic
🎤 Thursday we hosted a panel event on the Rights of Nature movement
⚖️ And finally on Friday, we were delighted to host the JUSTICE Annual Conference.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting an Insight Lunch in partnership with in support of Anti-Slavery Week (14 – 18 October).

During this engaging session, we delved into the intricacies of Justice & Care’s Navigator Scheme, a pioneering approach that offers a lifeline to victims of slavery and human trafficking. Our team gained invaluable insights into the complexities of the issues in these cases and the comprehensive support Justice & Care provides to victims.

One of the highlights was a deep dive into a specific case study, which illuminated the real-life challenges faced by victims and the critical role of tailored, compassionate support in their journey to recovery.

We are immensely grateful to James Clarry, Megan Wimlett, Charlotte Trefusis, Debi Lloyd and the whole Justice & Care team for their enlightening session - we really look forward to doing more together.

We were thrilled to welcome the fourth cohort of our Brampton Future Lawyers programme, with 10 new students joining us! 🙌

At the launch event, students met with their mentors over afternoon tea and received guidance from alumni members of the programme.

Since 2021, our programme has been running in collaboration with Brampton Manor Academy in East Ham. The programme offers two years of comprehensive skills sessions, ongoing mentoring from a Simmons lawyer and two one-week work experience placements. We are committed to supporting these students in reaching their goals of pursuing a career in commercial law, and nurturing the next generation of legal talent.

We are also delighted to share that three alumni members from the first cohort have accepted training contracts with us following successful vacation schemes this summer. ☀️👏

Congratulations to them and we look forward to them continuing their journeys with us! 🛣️

Looking back at our Pride celebrations across our global network of offices. 🌍

📍 Beginning in Bristol, UK, the team ran a joint Drag Bingo night in collaboration with other businesses in their office building including Amdaris, Mewburn Ellis, Gleeds, Freeths and Parmenion. A lot of fun was had and it was great to see many businesses come together to celebrate LGBTQ+ equality.

📍 In Düsseldorf, Germany, the team celebrated by attending Pink Monday – an annual vibrant celebration at the fun fair. Our LGBTQ+ network, Allies, Partners, Associates, and Business Services teams from both Düsseldorf and Frankfurt offices came together for the day. From thrilling rides on the carousels to shared moments of laughter and camaraderie, it was a memorable occasion for everyone involved.

📍 In Frankfurt, Germany, the team proudly participated in the Rainbow Day LGBTQ+ Recruitment Fair, representing Simmons as an LGBTQ+ friendly firm. 🏳️‍🌈 Being part of Rainbow Day was not just an opportunity to meet potential future colleagues but also a powerful statement of our commitment to diversity and inclusion within the legal profession and beyond.

All events were filled with joy, unity, and the spirit of inclusivity. Here’s to celebrating diversity and fostering an inclusive environment, not just during Pride month but every day. 🌈

Rounding up LGBT History month, we hear from Emma Field, Supervising Associate in our London office and co-chair of our UK LGBT+ network.

We asked Emma what progress has she noticed in the workplace for the LGBT+ community?

“Since joining the firm, I have been happy to notice an increase in high profile acts of allyship from colleagues (e.g. inclusion of pronouns in email signatures; attendance at / engagement with events hosted or co-hosted by the LGBT+ network), and the recognition of the importance of diversity and inclusion reflected in the actions of senior management for example, in the form of speaking at panels, attending events, and allocating resources to LGBT+ initiatives."

Looking to the future, Emma said: “I hope that new generations of entry-level joiners feel able to join the firm and help shape our policies and practices, contributing new ideas. I also hope we can create an environment that feels genuinely inclusive for new LGBT+ joiners so that as a firm we can make the space for new conversations that they may want to have."

Deian Rhys, partner and co-chair of the International LGBT+ network added: “The past year has been another of great initiatives within the LGBT+ Network but has also seen great examples of allyship within the firm as a whole. I'm looking forward to hearing from new and existing members of the Network in the year ahead and, like Emma, to their ideas for new initiatives and new ways of engaging with our colleagues and communities."

Barclays, and Simmons & Simmons have an exciting opportunity for you! 🌟

Is it your ambition to qualify as a lawyer in England & Wales? Do you have a special interest in the financial services sector? Have you been wondering how to combine these interests into an end goal?

Aspiring financial services lawyers can apply for a joint legal training contract. Over two years the training contract will combine a year’s private practice experience at either TLT or Simmons & Simmons and a year’s in-house experience at Barclays*. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and gain well-rounded experience across two organisations. Applications should be made online directly to TLT and/or Simmons & Simmons by 17 February 2023.

Last week, our team in Dublin braved the cold to take part in a beach clean-up with Flossie and The Beach Cleaners at Sandymount Strand.

Litter has a huge impact on our marine ecosystem and by taking just an hour or two to pick up a few plastic items from the water and surrounding beaches, we can keep millions of pieces of microplastic out of the ocean, so even a little effort on our part makes a big difference to the environment. Well done team!
