International students in the UK often explore options to remain in the country after or during their studies. Under UK Home Office immigration rules, a person holding a student visa may be able to switch to a number of other visa categories from inside the UK, provided they meet the eligibility requirements and apply before their current visa expires.

Below is an overview of some of the main immigration routes available to Student visa holders.

1. SKILLED WORKER VISA

The Skilled Worker visa is one of the most common routes for international graduates who wish to continue living and working in the UK long term.

To qualify, an applicant must:

• Have a job offer from a UK employer that holds a sponsor licence
• Receive a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
• Meet the minimum salary and skill requirements for the role
• Satisfy the English language requirements

In most cases, students must have completed their course before applying to switch into this route, although certain doctoral students may be able to apply earlier under specific conditions.

Under current immigration rules, the Skilled Worker route can eventually lead to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain).

2. GRADUATE VISA

The Graduate visa allows international students who successfully complete an eligible UK qualification to remain in the UK without employer sponsorship.

HOW LONG CAN YOU STAY?

A Graduate visa lasts for:

• 2 years for Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates who apply on or before 31 December 2026

• 18 months for applications submitted on or after 1 January 2027

• 3 years for PhD or other doctoral qualification graduates

The visa begins from the date the application is approved.

This route allows graduates to:

• Work at any skill level
• Change employers freely
• Be self-employed
• Look for long-term sponsored work later

However, the Graduate visa does not directly lead to settlement.

Could you pass Reform’s English language test? This is Reform promising that if they are elected, any migrant who wishes to stay in the UK (or come in the future) will need to pass an English language test at a level which most won’t be able to meet.

This is part of their wider proposal to withdraw Indefinite Leave to Remain from anyone in the UK who currently holds it, and require them to apply for a renewable work visa: there would be an English language requirement attached to this application.

Is Reform aiming to deport non-British pensioners?

Got a UK partner visa refusal?
First of all—this is incredibly stressful, and you’re not alone in feeling overwhelmed. The good news is that a refusal is not the end of the road. You usually have two main options 👉 appeal the decision or submit a new application.

What is an appeal?
An appeal means challenging the Home Office decision in a tribunal (similar to a court). You’ll need to explain why the refusal was wrong, provide evidence, and possibly attend a hearing where a judge will make the final decision.
If successful, the original decision can be overturned
If not, the refusal stands

Do you have a right of appeal?
Most partner visa refusals come with a right of appeal—this will be clearly stated in your decision letter.
Deadlines are strict:
• 14 days (inside the UK)
• 28 days (outside the UK)

💡 Why was your visa refused?
Understanding this is key:
• Missing documents or simple mistakes → usually better to apply again
• Disagreement over your circumstances (e.g. “exceptional circumstances”) → appeal may be stronger

How long does an appeal take?
Appeals are not quick.
• Typically 12–18 months for a full decision
• In the best case (if the Home Office reviews and withdraws early), it could be 4–6 months
This can be tough if you’re separated from your partner

Costs to consider:
• Appeal: ~£140 (plus any legal costs)
• New application: £1,407–£2064+ (non-refundable fees)
Priority Cost : £500 - £1000 on top of new application fees

Will you win?
