Proud Moment – I’ve been appointed as
IP Counsel to Variety – the Children’s Charity!

Variety is an incredible organisation that’s been supporting children and young people across the UK for over 70 years – providing essential equipment, wheelchairs, and life-changing experiences for those who are disabled or disadvantaged.

I’ve quietly supported their work behind the scenes for a number of years. Now, I’m honoured to formally take on this advisory role as Intellectual Property Counsel – helping protect the brand and work of a charity that truly makes a difference.

This role is in addition to my ongoing work as CEO of JOSHI-IP.LAW, and reflects our firm’s commitment to giving back and using our legal skills for good.

Cybersecurity Alert:
Innovative Hackers and Domain Theft Schemes

A recent case involving a valuable two-letter domain shows just how far hackers will go to claim high-value digital assets. A hacker group took an unconventional approach to steal a domain by filing a UDRP (Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy) complaint with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) – against themselves!

The domain, owned by a software company in Atlanta since the 1990s, was targeted by hackers who demanded $20,000 in cryptocurrency to "return control" of the domain. When the domain owner, a savvy software developer, confirmed there had been no breach, they refused to pay. The hackers, realizing the domain’s worth, concocted a bold plan: they filed a UDRP complaint with WIPO, deceptively listing themselves as the Respondent while pretending the actual owner was the Complainant!

The hackers even paid the filing fee and submitted their extortion emails as evidence. They manipulated communication channels by providing a fraudulent email they controlled, hoping to secure a domain transfer through a default judgment.

Thankfully, the domain owner, with some strategic support, was able to alert WIPO to the scam. Despite the fraudulent nature of the complaint, WIPO dismissed it due to a lack of trade mark evidence rather than addressing the fraudulent filing directly.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths cybercriminals will go to in pursuit of high-value domains. The creativity, persistence, and audacity of these hacker groups are both a warning and a call to action for robust cybersecurity measures.
