I asked a business owner this during a networking event recently.

He said...

“My business partner would just carry on.”

Not necessarily.

Because without proper agreements in place, shares can end up passing to family members who’ve never worked in the business a day in their life.

That’s when problems start.

Suddenly grieving families are involved in business decisions.

Partners lose control.

Businesses become unstable.

Most people insure their business premises before they protect ownership itself.

That’s backwards.

Someone said this to me recently:

“I thought being executor was just signing a few papers.”

It wasn’t.

Instead, he ended up dealing with:

People name executors without really thinking about what the role involves.

And people agree to it without understanding the pressure they could be taking on.

Choosing the right executor matters more than most people realise.

I was speaking to a gentleman recently in a second marriage.

He proudly said:

“Everything just goes to my wife if anything happens.”

Simple enough.

Until we talked about his children from his first marriage.

Because here’s the risk:

If everything passes outright to a new spouse, there’s no guarantee the children from the first marriage ever inherit anything later on.

Not because anyone’s malicious.

Life just changes.

Relationships change.
Circumstances change.
Wills change.

Blended families need careful planning - not assumptions.

Otherwise good intentions can accidentally disinherit the people you were trying to protect.

I was in the pub with someone recently who said:

“I think I’ve got about three pensions floating around somewhere.”

Then he laughed and added:

“No idea who gets them if I die though.”

That’s more common than people realise.

Old jobs.
Old paperwork.
Old beneficiary forms.

Meanwhile life’s moved on completely.

New partner.
Kids.
Grandchildren.

But the paperwork hasn’t caught up.

We’ve seen people unintentionally leave significant pension money to ex-partners simply because nobody ever updated the forms.

I heard this on the golf course recently.

“Ah, the kids will sort it out between themselves.”

Maybe.

Until emotions get involved.

I’ve seen close families fall apart over:

• One sentence in a Will
• A missing conversation
• An assumption someone made years ago

Grief changes people.
Stress changes people.
Money definitely changes people.

The people who leave the smoothest estates behind aren’t the lucky ones.

They’re the ones who planned properly.

Because “they’ll work it out” is not an estate plan.

I was chatting to a couple recently.

Lovely people. Late 60s.

The husband quietly admitted:

“We never got round to sorting Power of Attorney.”

Then his wife’s health changed unexpectedly.

Suddenly, simple things became difficult:

• Accessing accounts
• Managing bills
• Speaking to providers
• Making decisions

People think estate planning is all about death.

A lot of the time, it’s actually about what happens while you’re still here.

Because losing capacity without the right paperwork in place can create enormous stress for the people trying to help you.

And usually, it happens faster than anyone expects.

I was talking to a business owner the other day over coffee.

Successful bloke.
Staff. Office. Good turnover.

I asked him a simple question:

“If something happened to you tomorrow, could your wife access the business accounts?”

He just stared at me.

Turns out... no.

The company bank account was only in his name.
No clear authority.
No proper succession plan.

His family would’ve been left trying to keep the business alive while dealing with probate at the same time.

Most business owners spend years building the company...
and about 10 minutes thinking about what happens if they’re suddenly not here.

The estate seemed straightforward.

Then a claim was made.

Tax doesn’t wait for convenience.

Planning creates options. Lack of it removes them.
