For many skilled professionals, the answer goes beyond salary and career progression. Long-term stability, settlement opportunities and the ability to build a future are often equally important.

As the UK considers extending the route to settlement from five years to ten, new research suggests that some of the very people the economy depends on may be the most likely to look elsewhere.

In our latest blog, we examine what tougher settlement rules could mean for employers, migrants and the UK's ability to compete for international talent.

Should exceptional scholars be caught up in broad immigration restrictions?

Leading UK universities have urged the government to exempt Chevening scholars from recent Student Visa Restrictions affecting applicants from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan.

Universities argue that these scholars have already passed a rigorous government-led selection process and represent future leaders, policymakers and changemakers across the globe.

Our latest blog explores the debate, the government's position and what these restrictions could mean for the UK's higher education sector and international partnerships.

UK Expands eGate Access for More Children This Summer ✈️

Good news for families travelling to and from the UK this summer!

From 8 July 2026, children aged 8 and 9 years old who are at least 120cm tall and travelling with an adult will be able to use UK eGates.

🔹 Around 1.5 million more children are expected to benefit over the next year
🔹 The change will apply across more than 290 eGates in UK and juxtaposed ports
🔹 Faster border clearance means smoother journeys and reduced waiting times for families

UK government says this move is part of its wider border transformation programme, alongside the rollout of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system and future contactless border technology.

This development aims to make travel more convenient while maintaining strong border security.

New research from the UK’s Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) reveals important insights into who stays in the UK after receiving a Skilled Worker visa and who leaves.

🔹 Healthcare workers are among the most likely to settle long-term.

For example, 94% of nurses remain in the UK five years after arrival.

🔹 Migrants on relatively lower wages also show very high stay rates, reflecting a strong commitment to remaining in the UK.

🔹 Higher earners, however, are more likely to leave after a few years, often due to greater global mobility and wider international career opportunities.

The MAC notes that these findings are highly relevant to the government’s proposed “earned settlement” reforms. Extending the route to settlement could potentially discourage some highly skilled professionals particularly higher earners and workers in higher education from choosing the UK or remaining long-term.

At the same time, sectors such as health and care continue to demonstrate exceptionally strong retention levels, highlighting the critical role migrant workers play in sustaining the UK workforce.
