This past Friday marked the 23rd Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards. The awards celebrate the vital work of lawyers and support staff who ensure that, irrespective of income, people’s rights have real, practical meaning because they can be enforced.
The night began with a few words from LAPG Co-Chair Jenny Beck KC (Hon). Symeon Brown served as our always-incredible compere for the evening, ensuring each finalist was recognised for their life-changing work. Dame Karen Buck, who fought relentlessly for legal aid and access to justice during her time as an MP, joined Jenny and Symeon on stage to present trophies to our winners. The next hour was spent celebrating our 30 finalists and their outstanding work. We at LAPG salute you all and are incredibly proud to call you colleagues and friends.
The LALYs are the best night in the legal calendar, and they could not happen without the support we receive from the LALY judges, our wonderful volunteers, our Board and Committee, and Fiona Bawdon, co-founder of these awards, who guides and shapes the LALYs every year. We thank our supporters and sponsors, listed below, most of whom we have worked with for many years.

Thank you to everyone who makes the LALYs such a significant event – including all of you who joined us for our annual celebration of legal aid practitioners by legal aid practitioners. Finally, a last thank you must go to our finalists. Please rest assured that we see the value of your work and we know that you are changing and improving lives every day.
We look forward to celebrating another amazing group of finalists next year and for many years to come.
