The UK has promised to accept refugees from Ukraine

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised that the United Kingdom would accept those fleeing Ukraine in fear of persecution.

Speaking about the Ukrainian crisis in the House of Commons, Johnson said that the UK "will continue to do what it has always done" and help people displaced as a result of the conflict.

However, it is reported that the UK government has not yet developed an official plan for accepting potential refugees from Ukraine, and its creation will be announced separately.

THE CORONAVIRUS BUDGET 2020

On 11 March 2020, the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announced a £30billion package of measures aimed to boost the UK economy and allow it to ride the temporary recession expected because of the coronavirus outbreak. Earlier on the same day, the Bank of England announced an emergency interest rate cut, from 0.75% to 0.25%, aimed at allowing banks to lend more to business and bringing the cost of borrowing back to a record low.
The aim of both the budget and rates cut is clear – the combination is aimed at helping small and medium businesses with cashflow at a time when they are likely to be facing reduced demand, reduced profits and increased costs from staff absence. Continue reading>>

CONSIDERATIONS FOR BUSINESSES DURING THE CORONAVIRUS/COVID19 OUTBREAK

As the number of people infected with Covid-19 continues to rise rapidly, the UK government has started to take precautionary measures to handle a possible pandemic. There are also ongoing discussions on how Covid-19 will affect businesses and their workforce.

As Covid-19 continues to spread, many companies have already taken extensive measures to protect employee health and safety, such as restricting travels abroad for business or meetings and encouraging working from home. The long-term economic consequences Covid-19 will have are difficult to predict.

Multiple questions are being asked:

1. What are the employer’s obligations and the employee’s rights due to the risk of the virus? Continue Reading>>

BREXIT, IMMIGRATION, AND MODERN SLAVERY

The introduction of the Government’s post-Brexit ‘points-based’ immigration plans, set to come into force in January 2021, have dominated this last week’s headlines with many businesses criticizing the proposals. The Home Secretary made it clear in a BBC interview that the government is seeking to attract those with ‘the right talent’ and reduce those coming to the UK with ‘low skills’.

The proposals include widening the definition of skilled workers to include those educated to an A-level or equivalent standard, not just graduate level, including carpentry, plastering and childminding. However, other categories will be removed, such as waiting tables and certain types of the farmworker. The plans include lowering the minimum salary thresholds for skilled migrants coming to the UK with a job offer, but there is no visa option for low-skilled migrant workers. Continue reading>>

EMPLOYMENT LAW AND UNPAID WORK – DO WE NEED THE RIGHT TO DISCONNECT?

In a recent interview, the Labour leadership candidate, Rebecca Long-Bailey, called for workers to be given the “right to disconnect”, allowing people to ignore work e-mails, calls and messages outside their working hours. She wants to end the “24/7 work culture” which is now ingrained in many industries and safeguard workers’ mental health. DISMISSAL, DISCRIMINATION AND HEALTH AND SAFETY LAW
All workers are entitled to work in an environment where their health and safety are properly protected. The primary responsibility lies with the employer under health and safety law and includes matters such as training, risk assessments, consultation, equipment and insurance to the more practical items like first-aid facilities, bathrooms, and drinking water. However, health and safety law does not operate in isolation, especially where mental health conditions are concerned. Continue reading >>

THE SHORTAGE OCCUPATION LIST – ARE YOU IN DEMAND?
According to a report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) earlier this month, UK employment is in its biggest decline in more than four years, with a plunge in the number of job vacancies. The report indicates the number of people in work declined by 58,000, to 32.75 million, in the last quarter. The falling number of people working in retail and recent high street store closures significantly contributed to the drop in employment.
Oddly, despite the falling number of people in work, the number of unemployed for the period also fell by 23,000, to 1.31 million. Continue reading>>
