Major Migration Changes on the Horizon 🇦🇺

Significant changes to Australia’s migration program are expected to be announced tomorrow, Thursday 17 September 2026.

Based on information currently in the public domain, areas potentially affected include skilled migration, international students and dependants, temporary visas, bridging visa arrangements and migration processing priorities, as the Government continues to reshape the migration program.

The finer details and importantly, what they mean for current and prospective visa applicants, will become clearer following the announcement.

Thames Migration will provide an update once the changes are formally released.

Keep informed as the changes occur as we will publish on our website.

Another successful Australian PR journey! One involving the National Innovation Visa (NIV) pathway. 🇦🇺

We are grateful to receive this feedback from a recent client who highlighted the importance of experience, attention to detail and identifying the right migration pathway for an individual profile.

At Thames Migration, we have more than 20 years’ experience in Australian immigration. For National Innovation Visa matters in particular, our focus is on understanding the applicant’s achievements, assessing how their profile aligns with the NIV framework, and preparing a carefully considered, decision-ready application.

The NIV is a highly selective pathway and is not appropriate for every applicant. A strong strategy starts with a realistic assessment of the individual’s credentials, achievements and potential contribution to Australia.

Thank you to Rezanur and his family for trusting our team with such an important journey, and congratulations again on achieving Australian permanent residency.

Australia's new skilled visa processing direction reflects current workforce pressures and broader government priorities...
02/08/2026

Australia's new skilled visa processing direction reflects current workforce pressures and broader government priorities across defence, housing, healthcare and education.

What is particularly notable, however, is that processing priority is determined not only by occupation, but also by where the applicant is located.

The new Direction establishes five priority groups:

1️⃣ Law enforcement and defence occupations – onshore
2️⃣ Law enforcement and defence occupations – offshore
3️⃣ Construction, healthcare and teaching occupations – onshore
4️⃣ All other skilled visa applicants – onshore
5️⃣ All other skilled visa applicants – offshore

The policy rationale is understandable. Australia needs skilled workers in critical sectors linked to national security, housing delivery, healthcare and education. The Direction also places greater weight on applicants already in Australia, on the basis that this provides a practical way to address immediate workforce shortages.

While this approach appears logical, the key issue is that processing priority is no longer driven solely by labour market need or occupation—it is also determined by the applicant's location.

In practical terms, an offshore Registered Nurse nominated for an aged care role in regional Queensland may receive a lower processing priority than an onshore applicant in a non-priority occupation, such as a Marketing Specialist or ICT Account Manager.

📌 Location now plays a significant role in processing priority, and this may have important implications for offshore applicants planning their migration strategy.

01/07/2026

From 1 July 2026, the Australian Government has increased visa application charges across a range of visa categories, including:

✔️ Partner Visas
✔️ Skilled Independent (189) Visas
✔️ Skilled Nominated (190) Visas
✔️ Skilled Work Regional (491) Visas
✔️ Employer Sponsored (482 & 186) Visas
✔️ Student and Graduate Visas

For many applicants and families, these increases represent a significant additional cost. Ensuring your application is correctly prepared from the outset has never been more important.

With over 20 years of Australian immigration experience, Thames Migration assists individuals, families and employers to navigate the visa process with confidence. A well-prepared application can help minimise delays, requests for further information, and potentially costly mistakes.
