Our latest member survey highlights the growing pressure facing dental professionals and the impact on their wellbeing:

▪️ Nearly half of dental professionals are considering cutting their hours.

▪️ Almost 1 in 3 have thought about leaving the profession.

▪️ Over 80% report increased stress.

▪️ A third say this raises the risk of mistakes.

Dental professionals told us that staff shortages, rising patient expectations and fear of complaints are creating an increasingly unsustainable working environment - not only taking a toll on our members' health, but also raising concerns about providing safe, effective patient care.

To ensure a sustainable future for dentistry, supporting and retaining the workforce must be a priority.

Unfortunately, complaints are commonplace, but receiving your first one can still be daunting.

Senior dento-legal advisor Bryan Harvey gives his tips:

- Don't react defensively. Complaints should be dealt with calmly, constructively and in line with your practice complaints procedure

- Remember, this is an opportunity to improve your service. We can all learn from patient feedback, be it positive or negative.

- Keep a written record of all complaints, and file correspondence and documentation away from clinical records.

- Contact us as soon as you're aware of a complaint for guidance on how to manage the situation for the best outcome

It can be challenging to remain calm and in control in a busy clinical environment with the weight of patient expectation.

It's not surprising that mental wellbeing within the profession has declined in recent years as the dental service struggles to respond to patient need.

You might not be able to directly control pressures like workload and challenging patients, but it's important not to ignore their impact or the signs of burnout in yourself or your colleagues.

In our latest DDU journal, we cover the signs of burnout, what you can do to help colleagues and sources of support.
