With Andy Burnham’s by-election victory fuelling speculation about a potential move to Number 10, Mark Chick takes a closer look at what his track record tells us about the future direction of housing policy.

From tougher enforcement against poor-quality rentals in Greater Manchester to his clear influence on the Renter’s Rights Act, Burnham has consistently prioritised raising standards, increasing accountability, and expanding tenant protections. But his approach is not one-dimensional. His support for large-scale council housebuilding, tax reform, and leasehold overhaul suggests a far broader reshaping of the housing landscape could be on the horizon. https://www.bishopandsewell.co.uk/2026/06/19/what-to-expect-from-prime-minister-burnham-on-housing-strategy/

Are we asking too much of our young sporting heroes? The latest Ben Stokes saga suggests we might be, writes David Little in this week's sports blog. As England head into the second test without their captain - sidelined not for form, but for a late‑night curfew breach - we’re once again confronted with an uncomfortable truth: the expectations placed on elite athletes often bear little resemblance to the realities of their lives. When brilliance meets pressure, and pressure meets human nature, the results are rarely tidy. https://www.bishopandsewell.co.uk/2026/06/18/do-we-hold-our-young-sporting-heroes-to-too-high-a-standard/

Our World Cup Bake Sale is underway! We're enjoying baked goodies from Poland, Argentina, England, France, Moldova, Greece, Cyprus, USA, Austria, Lithuania, Belgium, South Africa, Italy, Switzerland and Lithuania - representing (at least some of...!) the World Cup squads - and the rich heritage of our team!

The haul is a family affair and includes a delicious batch of Moldovan pastries baked by one of our team's wonderful Grannies, and a selection of cookies tried and tested by none other than Ed Sheeran's grandparents!

Thank you to our ESG Committee for organising and to all the bakers (and their grannies...) for your efforts!

Listen Without Prejudice
New Episode out Now!
Navigating the Realities of Commercial Lending

As well as answering the fundamental question of why a conveyancer and a corporate lawyer met up to record a podcast, Andrew Kavanagh and Charlie Davidson take look at what really happens when businesses move from high street lending into bespoke commercial finance. From bridging loans to personal guarantees and enforcement risk, they outline the pressures that shape commercial borrowing and the lessons still felt after the pandemic.

A recent Court of Appeal decision shows that section 21 cases remain highly relevant, particularly where deposit protection is concerned.

With possession now dependent on proper compliance, these issues aren’t going away, writes David Smith, Partner in our Landlord & Tenant team.

This case is notable for focusing on minor technical errors in prescribed information, rather than any failure to protect the deposit. It highlights a growing judicial reluctance to let trivial defects block possession, while still recognising the importance of the statutory scheme.

David looks at what the Court decided and why it matters.

Listen Without Prejudice
New Episode out Wednesday
Navigating the Realities of Commercial Lending

In the latest episode of Listen Without Prejudice, Andrew Kavanagh, a Partner in our Corporate Commercial team sits down with Charlie Davidson, Senior Associate in our Residential Property team, discuss what really happens when businesses move beyond traditional high street lending and into the world of bespoke commercial finance.

From bridging loans to personal guarantees, debentures, and enforcement risk, they run through the structures and pressures that shape commercial borrowing today.
Commercial lending isn’t just about the interest rate.

Borrowers often underestimate the weight of events of default, monitoring obligations, and technical covenants buried deep in loan documents.

Pandemic lessons still matter.
Rapid shifts in asset valuations exposed security positions that once looked rock solid - a reminder that risk can surface quickly and unexpectedly.

Relationships trump rigidity.
While lenders can document every possible default scenario, long term value often comes from supporting viable businesses rather than enforcing at the first sign of trouble.

Whether you're advising clients, negotiating terms, or considering a commercial loan yourself, this episode offers a practical look at what really matters when money changes hands.

Real Madrid has delivered another episode in what often feels like football’s most dramatic soap opera. The club’s presidential election, a process governed by strict rules, eye watering financial guarantees and the occasional outlandish campaign promise, has once again produced a storyline worthy of prime time TV, writes David Little our Sports Law specialist.

With Florentino Pérez calling early elections after a rare trophy less spell, challenger Enrique Riquelme stepped forward, big promises followed, and rumours swirled around names as big as Erling Haaland, Jurgen Klopp and even Rafael Nadal. What unfolded was a mix of ambition, missteps and classic Real Madrid theatre… https://www.bishopandsewell.co.uk/2026/06/10/real-madrid-soap-opera-finishes-its-latest-episode/
