Teaching offer in hand. Visa stuck at paperwork.

That’s usually where the panic starts — because UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Thailand can all ask for different attestation, certification or translation steps, and one missing document can push your start date back by weeks.

For some routes, that means a certified or attested degree and police document. For others, embassy attestation or a sworn translation is the step that gets missed.

If you’re heading abroad to teach, don’t guess the route. Find out exactly what your documents need: country.apostillelondon.com

Sending educational documents to Egypt? The route is nothing like what you would expect.

For most countries, educational certificates follow the standard route — solicitor or notary certification, then FCDO apostille, then embassy attestation. For Egypt, educational documents follow a completely separate route that bypasses the apostille entirely.

Egyptian educational certificates at all UK levels must first be submitted to the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau (ECEB) for attestation. No notarisation. No UK apostille. Just the ECEB — and then the Egyptian Consulate for final legalisation.

The ECEB charges per educational document, and the processing time is 15 to 25 working days. That is the longest turnaround for any document type in Egypt — and one of the longest for any destination we handle.

If you start the process assuming the standard apostille route applies, you will have paid FCDO fees for a step that Egypt does not require — and missed the step it does.

Most countries ask for a criminal record certificate before they will grant you a visa. Kuwait does it the other way around.

For Kuwait visa applications, your UK criminal record certificate must be issued after your Entry Visa has already been granted by the Kuwaiti authorities. Not before. After.

This means the sequence most people follow — get all documents ready, then apply for the visa — does not work for Kuwait. If you obtain your ACRO certificate before the Entry Visa is granted, it will not be accepted. You will need to get another one.

There is more. The original Entry Visa document issued by the General Department of Residency Affairs must be presented alongside the ACRO certificate. A notarised copy of your passport must also be submitted with it. Each document requires individual certification, apostille, and Embassy attestation — they cannot be bundled.

We see this catch people out regularly — professionals who have done everything right, in the wrong order, and have to restart part of the process.

If you are relocating to Kuwait, tell us early. The sequence matters more than the speed.

You are about to put your original birth certificate in an envelope and post it to a company you found online. That is a completely reasonable thing to feel uncomfortable about.

Here is exactly what happens from the moment it arrives at our London office.

Your document is logged immediately — time-stamped, recorded, and tracked from arrival. It does not sit in a pile. It does not wait until someone has a moment. It is logged the moment it comes through the door.

We check the document before anything else. Is it the right document for the destination? Is the certification route correct? Are there any issues that would cause rejection? We check all of this before the document goes anywhere near the FCDO — because FCDO fees are non-refundable if the document is rejected.

If certification is needed, we use only FCDO-registered solicitors and notaries. Not the nearest available. Specifically registered ones. We submit to the FCDO ourselves. We collect from the FCDO ourselves. We do not use third-party couriers for this stage.

Your original is returned by DHL tracked worldwide — with a scanned copy sent to you before dispatch so you have a record.

We handle hundreds of original documents every month. Every one of them belongs to someone whose life depends on getting it right.

You studied hard. You earned the qualification. Qatar will not accept it.

This is one of the most painful rejection situations we encounter — and the one that feels most unfair. If your degree, diploma, or professional qualification was obtained through distance learning or an online programme, the Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not accept it for legalisation.

It does not matter which institution awarded it. It does not matter how respected the programme is. It does not matter that your employer has already accepted it. The regulation is categorical: distance learning and online programme certificates are not accepted for legalisation under Qatar MFA rules.

This affects more people than you would think. The growth of online and blended learning over the last decade means a significant number of professionals hold qualifications that simply cannot be legalised for Qatar — regardless of what anyone else tells them.

If you are moving to Qatar for work and your degree was obtained online or through distance learning, find this out before you start the process. Not after you have paid FCDO fees.

Moving to Spain on a nomad visa? Applying to study in Spain?
Same country. Completely different document rules.

This is the distinction that catches British applicants out more than anything else we see for Spain — and almost nobody explains it clearly.

Educational documents for a Spanish STUDY VISA must be notarised by an FCDO-registered notary public before an apostille. A solicitor certification — which is cheaper and far more widely available — will not be accepted by the Spanish consulate for this route.

Educational documents for a NOMAD VISA or other non-study visa do not require notarisation before apostille. Solicitor certification is acceptable.

The difference in cost is significant. Notarisation from £210 per document versus solicitor certification from £120 per document. The difference in consequences is more significant. A study visa application with solicitor-certified documents instead of notarised documents will be rejected. The FCDO fee is non-refundable.

Before you certify anything for Spain, confirm your visa type. Then confirm the certification route. Then submit.

The FCDO website says to use a solicitor or notary.

It does not say they must be registered with the FCDO.

That one missing sentence has cost our clients hundreds of pounds in non-refundable fees. We see it every single week — someone follows the official guidance to the letter, uses their local solicitor, pays the FCDO fee, and gets rejected.

They come to us quoting the FCDO's own instructions.
They are right. The instructions are incomplete.

What the website does not tell you:

The solicitor or notary who certifies your document must be specifically registered with the FCDO
Legalisation Office. Not just qualified. Not just practising. Specifically registered.

A solicitor who has never registered with the FCDO cannot certify a document for an apostille, regardless
of how experienced they are.

We only use FCDO-registered professionals. Every document we handle is checked before it goes near
the FCDO. Because once that fee is paid and the document is rejected, the money is gone.

Only one original. Already in Dubai, Doha or Bangkok.

That is the moment people freeze. A job offer, a visa deadline, a wedding date — and one irreplaceable
document that needs to be in London before anything can move.

We understand why handing over an original document to a courier feels like a risk. Here is exactly what
happens once it arrives at our London office:

Every document is logged immediately on arrival — time-stamped and tracked from the moment it reaches
us. We check the route with FCDO-registered solicitors or notaries before anything is submitted to the FCDO.

You receive updates at every stage. Once complete, your original is returned worldwide by DHL tracked
courier, or collected from our London office if you are back in the UK.

You keep control. We handle everything once the document is in our hands.

One wrong route, and it stalls.

For Qatar or Kuwait, the biggest mistakes we see are simple:

Landmine #1: choosing the wrong certificate. We check the document first, then use FCDO-registered solicitors or notaries.
Landmine #2: missing embassy attestation. These are non-Hague destinations, so an apostille alone is not enough.
Landmine #3: assuming digital copies count. Qatar and Kuwait do not accept e-apostilles, and Kuwait embassy attestation can take 1–2 days; Qatar's can take 10–14 days.

If you’re dealing with a job offer, a family visa, or a school place, don’t risk a refusal at the last step. Find out exactly what your documents need: country.apostillelondon.com

Wedding papers to Spain? Stop here.

A re-certified certificate can be the wrong move — and Spanish authorities can reject it.

Many UK birth, marriage and death certificates can go straight to an apostille because they already carry recognised government signatures. For Spain, do not ask for it to be re-certified - like notarised - first unless you have been told to do so.

That one extra step can waste time when a residency move, wedding or inheritance deadline is already close.
