Life planning seems complicated and quite frankly boring because it doesn't capture the imagination.

Who wants to spend their spare time on life insurance, wills and inheritance tax?

So few people do, which is why mortgage brokers and estate planners are always dreaming up new ways to get us to care. But we'll only care when we see why it's important, to us. I believe we need a revolution in how we deal with this stuff.

Becoming a parent started the process of pulling my heart out and handing it over to a 1 year old joyrider. It made me realise how vulnerable I was and my responsibility to them even once I'm gone.

So, it always astounds me when I come across di****ad parents.

How do they sleep at night having not planned security for their little joyrider?

And the biggest di****ad parent is of course our own Prime Minister.

I won't be surprised if he doesn't have a will, he couldn't care less what happens to other people when he is gone.

Goal setter vs The Dreamer.

I've seen two types of people in my work at Lemons. The goal setters come with questions. They've done some research already. All they need is to cross t's and dot i's. I can help them by asking questions they may not have thought of, and by being a sounding board.

We skirt around this topic so much. Actually, we don't skirt it so much as ignore it until it smacks us right in the face.

Unfortunately, for some, it smacks us in the face earlier than planned with a life-changing event.

My dearest wish is that this stuff gets taught in schools. It's embarrassing getting later into life and having to admit you don't understand the basics.

Yes, there are blogs and YouTube videos galore, but for those of us who struggle with numbers, it's overwhelming.

There are increasing networks of women helping other women get better at this stuff.

Mental health has played a huge part in my life.

We're getting better at recognising it and finding the right words. But we have a long way to go. My mum had 'poor mental health' those are the clinical words I choose to use these days.

Those words hide a huge amount of her own and her kids' suffering.

She was somehow born sensitive and exposed. she died when she was 42; it was a huge release for me when she had gone.

When she died of cancer I felt released from the threats of su***de, the lack of her ability to function and the heavy responsibility of it all.

Now, I look after mine. And I don't mince my words. Death has messed with my mental health in so many ways. I remember being told that I was depressed when my husband died. I was outraged. I was not depressed, I was grieving.

Grief is a form of mental health, but it's not the same as being depressed. I've seen and lived both.

Lasting Power of Attorney - err what??

This is a bad name for a good bit of life admin.

My partner knows where to find my passwords, but that's only because I'm so crap at setting good ones. Great for the hackers at least. But who has access to your bank account if you were in a coma?

If that's not already set up and they don't know if you want the plug to be pulled or not, it can be hugely expensive and time-consuming to get the court to give them access.

Meanwhile British Gas will be chasing and your relatives will be in debt. So that's the deal you're handing them if you don't get your LPA written.

Sadly, the current system is complicated. I'm not going to lie to you, it's not going to be fun. But at least you know you'll be crossing the road and dodging the buses on your bike with that bit of life admin sorted.

Yes. That's right, a client has actually said this to me.

Sometimes, things break down in families, so think about who is going to inherit from you, and ensure you're happy with the setup.

A will is the best way to do this. It's hard putting stuff like this in black and white, taking emotions out of the equation. You can always change it if you patch things up later!
