The government has launched a major consultation aimed at giving stronger legal rights and financial security to the UK's 3.5+ million cohabiting couples.

For years, the "common law marriage" has been a persistent myth. Under current laws, unmarried partners who live together face significant financial vulnerabilities if they separate or if a partner passes away without a Will.
