MODERN RELATIONSHIPS. REAL MONEY.
The reality check. By Priya & Erica.

EPISODE 4 | FINANCIAL IDENTITY 💷🔐

Your financial identity should never depend on someone else’s.

Whether you manage the money yourself or have always left it to your partner, building your own financial foundation isn’t about mistrust — it’s about confidence, security and protecting your future.

Having your own financial identity may look like having:

💷 Your own ISA and savings
📈 Your own pension and retirement plan
🔐 Financial security and independence
💬 A voice in decisions about your financial future

If you’re in a relationship, it’s particularly important to understand where you stand financially — especially if you’re unmarried.

You can share a home, raise a family and build a life together while still maintaining financial independence.

Getting the right legal and financial advice can help you understand your position and put the right arrangements in place.

Have you started building your own financial identity? What steps have you taken?

EPISODE 3 | PROTECTING YOUR PROPERTY 🏡⚖️

Buying a property together is a big financial commitment.

Have you thought about what happens if your relationship ends — particularly if you’re unmarried?

When buying a property, it’s worth considering a Declaration of Trust, a legal document that records how the property is owned and sets out what should happen if the property is sold or you separate.

This is particularly important for unmarried couples, where the legal position may not always reflect what you both intended or contributed.

It can also be useful for married couples who want to clearly record their intentions around property ownership.

Getting the right legal advice at the time of purchase can help you understand your position, record your intentions and avoid difficult disputes later.

EPISODE 2 | THE COST OF CAREER SACRIFICE 👶💼

Starting a family can mean one parent taking a step back from their career.

This may feel like the right choice at the time — but have you thought about the long-term financial impact?

Taking time out of work or reducing your hours can mean:

💷 A pension gap
📉 Reduced earning potential
💰 Less financial independence
⏳ A lasting impact on your future finances

Marriage can provide certain legal and financial protections that unmarried partners may not have if one partner has sacrificed their career to care for the family.

Before you make a career sacrifice for your family, make sure you understand what it could mean for you — both now and in the future.

💡 Love and family decisions are personal. But your financial future deserves a conversation too.

Getting early legal and financial advice can help you understand your rights, put the right arrangements in place and avoid difficult surprises later.

EPISODE 1 | LIVING TOGETHER vs MARRIED 🏡💍

Think living together means you have the same legal rights as a married couple?

I’m afraid not. Living together and being married are not legally the same.

If you’re an unmarried couple living together, you don’t automatically have the same rights as married couples do to your partner’s property, pension or claim for spousal maintenance in the event your relationship breaks down.

And one common myth to clear up…

❌ There is no such thing as “common law marriage” in England & Wales.

I know I say this a lot, but understanding your legal position early really does matter, and can help you put the right arrangements in place, to protect your interests, and reduce the risk of disputes further down the line.

When people think about settling their finances on divorce, they often focus on the family home, their savings and any investments. 💰

But pensions can be one of the most valuable assets in a divorce - and one that divorcing couples can easily overlook.

Don’t leave your pension out of the divorce conversation. Ensure you ask the three questions above ⬆️

It’s important to obtain full and frank disclosure, including pension information before agreeing to a financial settlement on divorce.

Different types of pensions can have very different values and benefits, so specialist advice may be appropriate. This can often lead to obtaining a pension report from a Pension on Divorce Expert.

Always consult a family and divorce solicitor before finalising a financial divorce settlement, so that you understand the value and significance of the pensions involved. 👩🏽‍💼

15 years PQE 🥳

I qualified as a solicitor on 15 July 2011.

Opened a law firm with my boss in 2016.

Moved on and joined several city law firms.

Became self employed in 2020.

Became a mother in 2021.

Founded a specialist family law firm in 2025.

Over the years, I’ve come to understand what truly matters to me. I’ve made choices that allow me to live my values every day rather than simply believe in them. It’s taken years to reach that realisation, but it’s shaped the way I choose to live my life and how I represent my clients. 💕

Living together but not married? This might surprise you 👇🏽

When married couples divorce, they can make claims against marital and non-marital assets — including pensions, property, inheritance (in some cases), and claim for spousal maintenance.

But if you separate as an unmarried couple, those automatic rights simply don’t apply.

This means:
• No automatic right to property (unless it’s jointly owned and even then it gets complicated)
• No claim to your partner’s pension
• No entitlement to spousal maintenance

This can leave you in a much weaker financial position after a breakup.🍃

And if you have children, it can also affect their housing and overall stability.

It’s not always something people realise — so it’s worth understanding your position early on by speaking to a family lawyer at the start of a new relationship👩🏽‍💼
