Dolly Parton died yesterday at age 80, and her legacy is unlike anyone else’s on Earth. She grew up as one of twelve kids, raised in a one-room cabin in the Smoky Mountains, and through hard work, talent and pure charisma, became one of the most influential and successful musicians of all time.

She wrote more than 3,000 songs, 49 solo albums, and had 25 country No. 1s.

Dolly was universally beloved – and not just for her music. She was a dedicated philanthropist who did her part to make the world a better place: from helping send more than 300 million books to children around the world, to funding a children’s hospital, to backing the early research behind the COVID vaccine.

We will always love you, Dolly. Thank you.

Today would have been David Hockney’s 89th Birthday.

Years ago, he said: “I think I’m greedy, but I’m not greedy for money... I’m greedy for an exciting life... I intend to have it exciting until the day I fall over.” And he did exactly that.

From painting sun-soaked swimming pools in Los Angeles in his twenties to 300-foot landscapes on iPads in his eighties, he never stopped being exciting and became the nation’s most loved artist in the process.

For Dylan, a big part is football: years of watching it together, staying up far too late, and now playing it together too.

Not all of us are lucky enough to have a parent we’re proud of, or to have that kind of relationship. So, to those that do, why not ring them and show them some appreciation?
