Using a Legal Recruiter: The Do’s and Don’ts (In Plain English)

We thought this brief overview could be helpful if you are unsure what to expect from working with a recruitment agency.

Working with a recruiter shouldn’t feel transactional. It should be a professional relationship built on trust, clarity, and proper market insight. If you’re considering a move - now or in the future - here are a few principles that genuinely make the process smoother and more effective.

☑️ Do: Be clear about what matters to you
Not just the headline points, but the realities behind them - the work you enjoy, the culture you thrive in, the pressures you want to avoid, and the direction you want your career to take. The more honest the conversation, the better the outcome.

☑️ Do: Expect transparency
A good recruiter will tell you what’s realistic, what isn’t, and where the market genuinely sits. They’ll share the nuance, not just the positives.

☑️ Do: Ask questions
About the firm, the team, the expectations, the personalities, the workflow, the commercial pressures. It's best to learn as much detail about the opportunity from the outset so you can fully assess if there's a fit.

☑️ Do: Protect your CV
Your CV should only go where you’ve explicitly agreed. Clear consent is non‑negotiable. And keep your own record of where it’s been sent - duplicate applications can undermine your position and complicate your search.

⚫ Don’t: Let anyone rush you
A move is significant. You’re entitled to take the time you need to think, reflect, and ask for more detail. Pressure is a red flag.

⚫ Don’t: Accept vague answers
If something feels unclear - the role, the structure, the expectations, the numbers - ask again. Clarity is part of the service.

⚫ Don’t: Work with someone who doesn’t listen
If the conversation feels one‑sided or you’re being steered toward roles that don’t align with what you’ve said, that’s not a partnership.

⚫ Don’t: Feel obliged to move
Exploring the market doesn’t commit you to anything. Sometimes the most valuable outcome is realising you’re in the right place.

A good recruiter should make the process feel considered, informed, and respectful of your time and career.

We are focused to work with our candidate network in this way - it's the experience you should expect.
