How long can the police actually keep you on bail?
It’s one of the most common and stressful questions people ask after being released from custody.
You’re on bail. There may be strict conditions. You don’t know when it will end. And the uncertainty can feel overwhelming.
Under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, there are rules about how long pre-charge bail can last but the answer isn’t always straightforward.
While bail typically starts at three months, it can be extended to six, nine, and in some cases even longer sometimes requiring court approval. In complex investigations, bail can stretch far beyond what most people expect.
Many people don’t realise:
✔️ The “bail clock” can pause
✔️ Extensions must be properly authorised
✔️ Bail conditions can be challenged
✔️ You may be able to seek variations or removal of restrictions
If you’re currently on police bail and unsure where you stand, understanding your rights is crucial.
