Think you’re in a common law marriage?

Almost half of people wrongly believe that living together gives couples similar legal protection to marriage.

But in England and Wales, common law marriage does not exist.

The Government is currently considering whether unmarried couples should receive greater financial protection if they separate, or if one partner dies without a will.

The consultation closes tomorrow.

If you live with your partner, you should not assume that time together automatically gives you the same rights as a husband, wife or civil partner.

That is why things such as your Will, how your home is owned, declarations of trust and cohabitation agreements can matter.

Follow us for updates on this issue and what any future changes could mean for you and your partner.

Young people are told they need experience, but somebody has to give them that first chance.

On International Youth Day, Tracy Morgan, Managing Partner at JR Levins, has been reflecting on what businesses can gain when they open that door.

Ruby Jordan first joined JR Levins through a funded internship with Liverpool John Moores University and Unitemps.

That initial internship led to Ruby staying with the firm, becoming our Marketing Coordinator and, this year, being named Intern of the Year at the Unitemps Awards.

For Ruby, it created experience, confidence and direction. For JR Levins, it brought new ideas, new skills and eventually an entirely new function within the business.

As Tracy puts it, giving a young person an opportunity should not simply be viewed as a favour, as when it is done properly businesses can have just as much to gain.

Released Under Investigation?

If you've been interviewed and then released under investigation (RUI), you may hear nothing for months. No updates and no idea if or when a postal requisition will arrive. That uncertainty can cause stress and anxiety.

We can help. Our criminal defence team will do our best to get an update from the officer in your case, liaise with the police on your behalf, and advise you on procedure.

Even if you had a different firm at the interview stage, or no solicitor at all, we can still advise you.

A more colourful Saturday than usual for some of the JR Levins family 🏃‍♀️✨

Nikki and her daughter Hallie headed to Wavertree Athletics Centre for the Junior Neon Fun Run, raising money for Mind, our Charity of the Year.

A particular well done to Hallie for completing 2.8km – and to Nikki, who did her best to keep up behind her! 🥵

Even better, they raised an amazing £200 for Mind. 💙

Supporting Mind is a firm-wide effort for us throughout 2026, and it has been great to see our colleagues and their families getting behind the cause.

Thank you to everyone who ran, supported or donated.

Follow JR Levins as we continue our fundraising for Mind throughout the year.

A redundancy payment can look straightforward until you ask “Can I still pick up NHS bank shifts afterwards?"

That is exactly the sort of question to check before accepting the terms.

NHS voluntary redundancy schemes can include conditions around returning to NHS work. Depending on the wording, returning within a certain period may affect some of the payment you receive.

Before making a decision, check:
• What counts as returning to NHS work
• Whether bank work is included
• Whether any repayment provisions apply
• How long any restrictions last

The headline payment matters, but so does what happens afterwards.
If you're considering NHS voluntary redundancy, our free guide covers the practical checks to make before applying or signing. This includes payments, pensions, future NHS work and settlement agreements.

If your former partner has moved out and you have carried on paying the mortgage and covering the bills, it may feel as though the house is now yours. However, the legal position does not change because your circumstances have.

If both names remain on the property title, both people are still legal owners. Removing one person will normally require a formal transfer of equity, their involvement and the lender’s approval (where there is a mortgage).

It is also important remember that removing someone from the deeds does not automatically release them from responsibility for the loan.

Our latest article explains the process, including mortgage affordability, buying out a former partner and possible tax considerations: https://jrlevins.co.uk/can-i-remove-my-ex-from-the-deeds-and-keep-the-house-after-separation/

Stopped at a red light? Can you legally check your phone?

Many drivers assume it is safe to glance at their phone while traffic is stationary.

However, checking the time, reading a notification or changing a song while holding your phone can still lead to:

• Six penalty points
• A £200 fine
• A possible driving ban in some cases

For new drivers, six points will usually mean their licence is revoked.

Our latest article explains what counts as using a phone while driving, how mobile phone detection cameras work and what to do after receiving an allegation.
