A welcome and significant development for the DES community.

Researchers at the University of Exeter have begun work to build a clearer picture of the lasting impact of DES exposure, helping to address many of the questions that affected individuals and families have been raising for years. The research is expected to contribute to a greater understanding of the challenges faced by those living with the consequences of DES and where further support, awareness and investigation may be needed.

For many, this is an important step towards ensuring that the experiences of those affected are recognised and better understood. We welcome any progress that helps shine a light on the long-term effects of DES and supports those seeking answers.

The Home Office has introduced a new Priority Service for British citizenship applications, allowing eligible applicants to pay an additional £500 for a faster decision. With a target processing time of 30 working days, the new service offers greater certainty for those who need an outcome sooner for work, travel, family or financial reasons.

While the option may appeal to applicants keen to avoid long waiting times, it is important to understand what the service does, and does not, provide.

Paying for priority processing does not increase the likelihood of approval, remove eligibility requirements, or guarantee a decision within 30 working days. Complex cases may still take longer, particularly where additional checks are required.

Rachel Evans, Partner & Head of Private Immigration at Broudie Jackson Canter, explains how the new service works, who may benefit from using it, and when it may be better to focus on strengthening an application before submission.

We're proud to announce a new partnership between Broudie Jackson Canter, The University of Law, and the Vauxhall Law Centre, creating a unique Social Justice QWE Programme designed to support the next generation of solicitors while strengthening access to justice across our communities.

This innovative partnership brings together legal education, pro bono legal services and frontline community support to provide an aspiring solicitor with the opportunity to complete two years of Qualifying Work Experience in organisations that share a commitment to social justice across the Merseyside region.

Participants will gain practical experience across a broad range of legal disciplines, working alongside experienced professionals in university legal clinics, our specialist teams at Broudie Jackson Canter, and one of Liverpool's longest-established Law Centres.

For Broudie Jackson Canter, the programme reflects values that have been at the heart of our firm for more than 50 years. We believe legal careers can be built while making a meaningful positive difference to people's lives, and that access to justice should remain at the centre of the profession and our local community.

Yesterday, the Covid-19 Inquiry published its Module 5 Report, examining procurement during the pandemic.

Nicola Brook, Legal Director and Solicitor at Broudie Jackson Canter, who represents the Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK campaign group, has criticised both the findings and the inquiry's approach to key areas of evidence.

For the families Nicola represents, significant questions remain about how public money was spent during the pandemic and whether those responsible will ever be properly held to account.

For more than 37 years, the Hillsborough families, survivors and campaigners have fought tirelessly for truth, accountability and justice.

This week marks a significant moment in that journey, as Hillsborough Law reaches a major milestone in Parliament.

In this statement, Elkan Abrahamson, Director of the Hillsborough Law Now campaign and co-author of the Bill, reflects on what this moment means for those who have dedicated decades to ensuring that no family should ever have to fight the state to uncover the truth.

After more than 12 years of determined campaigning by Nicole Lawler and Kye Gbangbola, the Government has announced that a non-statutory inquiry will be established into the death of their son, Zane Gbangbola.

The inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding Zane's death in February 2014, as well as the response of public services during the incident and the treatment of his family in the years that followed.

Broudie Jackson Canter's Nicola Brook will represent Zane's parents throughout the inquiry process.

We welcome today's announcement and look forward to supporting Nicole and Kye as the inquiry progresses.

Outstanding Achievement at the 2026 Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards
Congratulations to everyone involved in the Hillsborough Law Now campaign on receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award at this year's Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards. It is a thoroughly deserved recognition of a campaign that has spent years fighting for accountability, transparency and fair treatment for bereaved families.

For many people, Hillsborough Law is about far more than legislative reform. It is about ensuring that families affected by major disasters, public failings and deaths involving state bodies are not forced to spend years battling for answers. The proposed Public Office (Accountability) Bill seeks to introduce a statutory duty of candour on public authorities to tell the truth, strengthen accountability, and provide non-means-tested legal representation for bereaved families at inquests.

These are issues that matter deeply to us at Broudie Jackson Canter.
Our Public Inquiry and Inquest team has long represented individuals and families seeking truth, accountability and meaningful change following some of the country's most significant failings. We understand the emotional, practical and legal challenges faced by those who find themselves navigating complex investigations, inquests and inquiries at the most difficult times of their lives.

The campaign for Hillsborough Law reflects a principle that should sit at the heart of any justice system: families should not have to fight public bodies simply to establish the truth. Justice should be transparent, accessible and fair.

This award recognises the incredible determination of the families, survivors, campaigners and lawyers who have worked tirelessly to keep these issues in the national conversation. We are proud to support the continued campaign for the legal aid and access to justice reforms contained within the Bill and congratulate Hillsborough Law Now on this important achievement.

The Government has now formally accepted all 67 recommendations made following Phase 1 of the Southport Inquiry, acknowledging the serious failings identified in the years leading up to the devastating attack that claimed the lives of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice da Silva Aguiar. The attack also left numerous children and adults with life-changing physical and psychological injuries, the effects of which continue to be felt by survivors, families and the wider Merseyside community.

The response accepts that opportunities were missed, warning signs were not communicated effectively, and no single organisation took ownership of the risk. The Inquiry also highlighted failures in information sharing, the handling of online activity, and the way concerns were assessed across multiple agencies.

Nicola Brook, Legal Director & Solicitor at Broudie Jackson Canter, reflects on what the Government’s response means for survivors, families and the wider public. Having represented the three adult survivors throughout the Inquiry, Nicola has also raised concerns that her clients first became aware of the Government’s response through the media, rather than through direct communication from Government. For those who have played a central role in the Inquiry, that is difficult to reconcile with assurances that victims and survivors remain at the heart of the process.

While the Government has promised urgent action across safeguarding, education, policing, Prevent and online safety, acceptance of recommendations is only the first step. The real test will be whether meaningful change follows, whether lessons are embedded into frontline services, and whether survivors are given a genuine voice in shaping what happens next.

We are incredibly proud to share that the Manchester Arena Civil Litigation Team has been named Personal Injury / Clinical Negligence Team of the Year at the Manchester Legal Awards 2026.

Andrew Leakey, Partner and Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation at the Jackson Lees Group, was a part of the team recognised.

This reflects a significant collective effort. Our team at Broudie Jackson Canter, working as part of the Jackson Lees Group alongside Hudgell Solicitors, Slater and Gordon, Byrom Street Chambers and Temple Garden Chambers, has spent more than four years pursuing civil claims on behalf of 359 bereaved families and survivors of the Manchester Arena attack.

There was never any certainty in this case. The priority remained on supporting people through unimaginable trauma with care, consistency, and honesty. Alongside complex litigation, the clients we supported were offered access to rehabilitation, financial guidance, and wider practical help.

This award recognises far more than a legal outcome. It reflects what can be achieved when firms and chambers work together with a shared purpose: keeping those affected at the centre of every decision and continuing to pursue accountability in incredibly challenging circumstances.

Our thanks go to everyone involved in this case. It has been an immense privilege to support the clients at the centre of this work.
