One of the questions we hear most often from parents is: Will my child be able to tell the judge what they want?

The answer isn't simply yes or no. Family Courts recognise that children are individuals with their own thoughts, feelings and wishes. However, the court also has a responsibility to ensure children are not placed under unnecessary pressure or asked to make decisions they shouldn't have to make.

A common misconception is that children are brought into court and asked to choose which parent they want to live with. That doesn't happen.

Instead, if appropriate, a Cafcass officer may speak with your child in a safe and supportive environment. These conversations are carefully managed to understand the child's wishes and feelings without making them feel responsible for the outcome.

The court will consider those views alongside many other factors, including the child's age, maturity, emotional wellbeing and overall welfare.

Older children may naturally have stronger views that carry greater weight, but there is no specific age at which a child automatically decides where they will live.

The court's role is to balance the child's wishes with what is ultimately in their best interests. Sometimes those two things align perfectly. Sometimes they don't.

Parents often worry about whether their child will feel caught in the middle. This is why it's so important not to ask children to take sides or feel responsible for adult decisions. Helping children feel safe, loved and supported throughout the process will always remain the priority.

If you're unsure how the court considers a child's wishes, our Family Law team can explain the process and help you understand what to expect.

When budgeting for your new home, it's easy to focus on one number. The purchase price.

The reality is that buying a property involves several additional costs that can catch buyers by surprise if they haven't planned ahead.

The good news? Most of these costs are entirely predictable.

Knowing about them early allows you to budget with confidence. Some of the most common additional costs include:
Stamp Duty Land Tax (where applicable).
Legal fees.
Property searches.
Land Registry fees.
Mortgage arrangement fees.
Survey costs.
Removal expenses.
Buildings insurance.

Whilst some costs vary depending on the property and lender, many buyers underestimate how quickly they add up. This is one of the reasons it's worth speaking to your conveyancer early.

Understanding the likely costs before you commit to a purchase allows you to avoid unnecessary financial pressure later.

Buying a home should be exciting. Careful planning helps keep it that way.

At BP Legal, we're always happy to explain the process, outline the likely costs and answer any questions before your transaction begins. There should never be any surprises when it comes to understanding your legal journey.

One firm for every stage of life.

Most people don't need a solicitor every week. But almost everyone needs one at some point.
Buying your first home.
Moving house.
Starting a family.
Writing your Will.
Resolving a dispute.
Growing your business.
Planning for retirement.

These moments rarely happen in isolation. They're chapters in your life.

At BP Legal, we believe legal advice should grow with you. That's why many of our clients first come to us for one service and return years later for another.

The solicitor who helps you buy your first home today may be the same solicitor who helps you write your Will tomorrow, or supports your business as it grows, or provides advice when life takes an unexpected turn.

We call this being your ‘Lawyer for Life’.

Because trust isn't built through a single transaction. It's built over years of honest advice, clear communication and consistently putting clients first.
Whatever stage of life you're at today, we're here to help you plan for tomorrow. If you're looking for a legal team you can rely on for years to come, we'd love to hear from you.

When someone asks you to be the executor of their Will, it often feels like a great honour, but many people say yes without really understanding what the role involves.

An executor isn't simply there to read a Will after someone dies. They're responsible for managing someone's entire estate and ensuring their wishes are carried out correctly.

Depending on the circumstances, that could include:
• Registering the death.
• Locating the original Will.
• Valuing the estate.
• Applying for a Grant of Probate if required.
• Paying any outstanding debts or taxes.
• Closing bank accounts.
• Selling property if necessary.
• Distributing the estate to beneficiaries.

It can be a significant responsibility, particularly during a time of grief. Executors also have legal duties.

They must act in the best interests of the estate, keep accurate records and ensure assets are distributed correctly. Mistakes can sometimes lead to delays or even personal liability. That's why many executors choose to seek legal advice.

Professional support can remove much of the pressure, ensure legal requirements are met and help the administration progress as smoothly as possible.

If you're writing your own Will, choosing the right executor is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Think carefully about who has the time, ability and willingness to take on the role. Sometimes the right person isn't necessarily the closest relative. It's the person who will be able to manage the responsibility with care and confidence.

Would you know where to start if you were named as an executor? If you'd like advice, our team is here to help.

When people compare solicitors, it's natural to look at price, but the true value of legal advice is measured long after the invoice has been paid.

It's measured by:
How clearly everything was explained.
How quickly someone responded to your questions.
How confident you felt throughout the process.
How effectively problems were identified and resolved.

The right solicitor doesn't simply complete legal work. They remove uncertainty, provide reassurance and protect your interests.

Whether you're buying a property, resolving a family matter or planning for the future, choosing someone you trust can make all the difference.

At BP Legal, we know our clients place enormous trust in us. It's a responsibility we never take for granted.

If you're comparing solicitors, we'd be happy to explain how we work before you make your decision.

When people think about Family Law, they often think about paperwork.

Court hearings.
Solicitors.
Legal documents.

What they don't often think about is the emotional toll the process can take.

Whether you're separating, making arrangements for your children or resolving financial matters, it's completely normal to experience uncertainty.

One day you might feel relieved. The next you might question every decision you've made.
Family law isn't just a legal process. It's often one of the biggest life changes someone will ever experience. That's why it's important to look after yourself as well as your case.

Try not to make important decisions when emotions are running high. Accept support from friends and family. If you need it, speak to a counsellor or therapist.

Keep communication with your former partner focused on practical matters wherever possible. Most importantly, remember that you don't have to navigate everything alone.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that instructing a solicitor means preparing for conflict.
In reality, good legal advice often reduces conflict. It provides clarity, it explains your options, and it helps you make informed decisions based on facts rather than emotion.

Our role isn't simply to deal with legal paperwork. It's to guide people through difficult periods with professionalism, empathy and practical advice.

There will come a point where this chapter is behind you. The decisions you make today can help create a stronger future for you and your family.

If you're facing a difficult family situation and don't know where to begin, we're here to help. If someone you know may benefit from reading this, share this post with them.

One of the questions people often feel embarrassed to ask is...

What should I wear?

The answer is actually quite simple. Family Court is a formal environment, but it isn't designed to intimidate you. You don't need an expensive suit or formal business attire. Smart, clean and comfortable clothing is usually appropriate.

Avoid clothing with offensive slogans, hats or anything that could appear disrespectful. More importantly than what you wear is how you conduct yourself.

Address the judge respectfully.
Avoid interrupting when others are speaking.
Keep your answers honest and concise.

Remember that emotions naturally run high during family proceedings, but remaining calm will always help you present yourself more effectively.

Many people are surprised by how different Family Court feels compared with criminal courts shown on television. There is no public gallery watching proceedings and hearings are generally private.

The atmosphere is focused on resolving family issues rather than assigning blame. Preparation also helps.

Arrive early.
Bring any documents requested by your solicitor or the court.
Switch your mobile phone to silent.
Take a bottle of water and give yourself time to settle before the hearing begins.

The more prepared you are, the more confident you'll feel walking through the courtroom doors.

If you're attending Family Court and would like advice beforehand, our experienced Family Law team is here to help guide you through every stage of the process.

Buying a home? Get your paperwork ready early.

One of the easiest ways to keep your property purchase moving smoothly is surprisingly simple.
Have your paperwork ready before your solicitor asks for it.

It might sound obvious, but delays often happen because important documents take longer than expected to arrive.

The good news is that a little preparation can save valuable time. Before your conveyancing journey begins, it's helpful to have the following ready:

Proof of identity.
Usually a valid passport or driving licence together with proof of address.

Your mortgage offer.
If you're buying with a mortgage, your solicitor will need to review the lender's instructions.

Proof of deposit.
You'll normally be asked to demonstrate where your deposit has come from.
This forms part of anti-money laundering regulations and is something every solicitor is legally required to check.

Signed paperwork.
Returning documents promptly helps keep your transaction progressing.
Having these documents organised from the outset reduces unnecessary delays and allows your solicitor to begin work more quickly.

Property transactions already involve several different organisations. Anything you can do to prepare early gives your move the best possible chance of staying on track.

Buying a home can feel complicated. Working with an experienced conveyancing team helps make the process far more straightforward.

Thinking about moving home? Save this checklist for when your purchase begins.
