When NHS Continuing Healthcare is refused, the impact can go far beyond the decision itself 🩵

For families caring for someone with complex health needs, being told that NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) funding has been refused can mean facing significant care costs, as well as the emotional strain of challenging a decision at an already difficult time.

James Urquhart-Burton, Winston Solicitors’ Continuing Healthcare expert, recently spoke to The Yorkshire Post about concerns around the consistency of CHC assessments and decisions, including regional variations and cases where families have later discovered that funding may have been available.

If you are caring for someone with complex health needs, a CHC refusal does not necessarily have to be the end of the matter. There may be grounds to challenge the decision or, in some circumstances, explore a retrospective claim.

🚨 Sexual Harassment In The Workplace: Are Your Policies Enough?

Sexual harassment at work isn't just about having the right policy in place. Employers need to understand their legal duties, but also what happens in practice when workplace culture, power dynamics and behaviour intersect.

On 11th November 2026, Winston Solicitors’ Head of Employment, Samira Cakali, is joining Louise from Culture Minds for a practical and interactive workshop exploring the relationship between sexual harassment law and organisational culture.

WHAT WE COVER

Designed for business leaders, managers and HR professionals, the session will cover:

âś…Current legal standards and employer duties

âś…Reviewing policies and processes

âś…Practical prevention strategies

âś…Culture and power dynamics

âś…Tools for managers

âś…An interactive case study based on realistic workplace scenarios

DETAILS

đź“… 11 November 2026
🕙 10am–2pm
📍 NatWest Accelerator, Leeds
đź’· ÂŁ250 + VAT per delegate

This is an opportunity to move beyond tick-box compliance and consider what your organisation can do to create a workplace where respectful behaviour is the standard, not simply something written in a policy.

🤝 An amicable divorce really is possible. But a financial agreement is only the beginning

When a marriage comes to an end, many couples want to avoid unnecessary conflict, reach an agreement between themselves and move forward as positively as possible.

But even when a divorce is amicable, it is important to make sure the financial agreement is properly documented.

Without the right legal documentation, financial claims can remain open long after the divorce itself has been finalised. This can leave both parties facing uncertainty in the future, particularly where there are significant assets involved.

Our latest blog explores why reaching an agreement is only part of the process, and what couples should consider when finalising their financial arrangements.

đź’· Could you reclaim care home fees that have already been paid?

Many families don't realise that it may be possible to reclaim care home fees from the NHS if a loved one should have been eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) funding during a previous period of care.

It could apply if:

🏡 Your loved one paid for care for a period when they may have been eligible for CHC

đź“‹ They were never assessed for CHC at the time

đź’™ Their health needs had become complex, intense or unpredictable

⚖️ They have since been awarded CHC, but you believe they should have qualified earlier

A retrospective claim can also be made after someone has died, provided the appropriate person is able to act on behalf of their estate.

Think you may have a claim? Find out more about reclaiming care home fees >>> https://www.winstonsolicitors.co.uk/nhs-continuing-healthcare-funding/retrospective-funding?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=reclaimcarefeescarousel&utm_campaign=chcretrospectivechcclaims

For the past four years, couples have been able to end their marriages without having to blame one another for what went wrong. With no-fault divorce now well established, attention is turning to what could be the next major change - reform of the law governing how finances are dealt with when a marriage ends.

The question is whether this reform will make financial outcomes fairer, and whether it could make reaching an agreement a more straightforward and positive experience for couples.
