Each year, WHD focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers.

This year, it's highlighting the immediate human cost of the climate crisis by pressuring world leaders to take meaningful climate action for the world’s most vulnerable people.

On this day in 1770, Captain Cook first sighted Australia. The Aborigine population of Australia, often referred to as if they are one homogenous group, in reality consisted of over 250 distinct social groups, each with their own differing languages. As Australia was colonised, these social distinctions were not acknowledged or respected. Many languages became extinct, and while it is estimated that over 100 languages remain in use, 90% are considered endangered. Only 13 continue to be transmitted to children. Relatively little study has been carried out of Aboriginal languages - it is not even certain how closely related the pre-contact languages were to neighbouring Papuan or Austronesian languages.

On this day in 1736, the Kingdom of Corsica was founded. The king in question was the German adventurer Theodor Stephan Freiherr von Neuhoff. Elected and crowned by the islanders, he assumed the title King Theodore I, and pursued their war of independence from the Genoese. Theodor fled Corsica in November later that year, seeking foreign assistance. In Holland he was imprisoned for Debt in Amsterdam. He later continued his private war with the Genoese and the French, returning to the island several times, before being confined to a debtors prison. He ultimately gained his freedom by signing over his crown to his creditors. Due to his German heritage, his language was an official language of his kingdom, alongside Italian, French and Corsican - which is closely related to Italian, the official language until 1859. In the present day, there are no monolingual speakers of Corsican, and only a minority can speak it well. However, only 10% of Corsicans exclusively speak French.

Today is The Day of the Georgian Language, commemorating protests in 1978 of changes in the Soviet constitution which would have ended the language's sole official status in the Georgian SSR.

Today marks sixty years since Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Since 1962, this event has been celebrated as Cosmonautics Day in the USSR and its successor states, and since 2011 as the International Day of Human Space Flight by the United Nations. More informally, tonight will mark the twentieth "Yuri's Night", celebrated around the world.

Yuri's Night is the World Space Party. Every year on or around April 12th we celebrate all that humanity brings with us as we explore the cosmos: music, art, science, culture, and each other! We use space to bring the world together, to empower the greatest parts of who we are, and give vision to wh...
