Any assets gifted directly in a will become owned by the recipient (often your adult children). If your children divorce or separate, then all of their estate is included in the divorce settlement. By creating a trust in your will, you can protect their inheritance until they are in a more stable situation. Contact me on 07970 108880 for further details.

Lasting Powers of Attorney are taking around 20 weeks to register. They cannot be used until they are registered. Let me help you to ensure that the people you choose can help you if you can no longer make decisions yourself or if you are temporarily out of action. Don't leave it until it becomes urgent.

Are you cohabiting with your partner? Have you made a will? Remember: no matter how long you have been together, the law does not recognise the more than three million cohabiting couples in the UK under the intestacy rules. Instead, you would have to bring costly Inheritance Act court proceedings to prove any entitlement.
Without a Will in place, the surviving partner could lose the roof over their head or be left with insufficient money to raise any children.

I completed my Dementia Friend training last week and learnt so much in a short time. Small takeaways include referring to people as "living with dementia" rather than "suffering from dementia" and understanding some of the confusion people may have, such as thinking that a black mat is actually a hole in the ground.
If you are interested in spreading the word about dementia or helping someone, why not become a Dementia Friend yourself and challenge your perception of dementia?

£270,000 to you together with half of the balance plus personal effects. This is what would happen if your are married with children and your spouse dies without having made a will. That's probably far from ideal.

When did you last update your Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney? Do you have one? Are you aware that there is now a specific form of wording that must be included in all LPAs where you have investments in a discretionary management scheme (which many of us have)? Without this, your attorneys may have difficulty managing those assets once the LPA takes effect. I can ensure that your LPA is properly worded to protect your investment interests. Call me on 07970 108880.

A Lasting Power of Attorney is something we don't usually consider until we are on the road to incapacity. It is a document that appoints a trusted relative or friend to make decisions on your behalf when you aren't able to. Given that:
- it takes up to 20 weeks to register the LPA once drafted; and
- life doesn't always go to plan
why not get yours in place now?

It is easy to put will drafting on the back-burner, but with so many divorces and blended families, it is even more important to ensure that your assets pass to the people you want them to go to. I can set up a trust in your will to provide for your new partner/second spouse for their lifetime, with the capital then passing to your children. Call me on 07970 108880 or visit my website https://www.laurabyers.co.uk/wills for further information.
