Morecambe Bay Wills and Estates Limited was established in 2019 after founder Nicola Combe lost her husband

to cancer. Our aim is to ensure that everyone has the right documents in place to give peace of mind and protection for family and assets. As fully trained, fully insured, Members of the Society of Will Writers, we offer peace of mind that you will get a comprehensive, service from our award winning team! Whether you need Wills, Powers of Attorney or Trusts, we are there to make it easy for you. And if you have lost someone and need help in your role as Executor, we can do that too. We offer appointments in our Lancaster office, in your home or via video for your convenience

Our prices are affordable (you can also pay in monthly payments) and discounts are available for those on low incomes and for those facing a diagnosis of cancer or dementia (both close to my heart).

A week or so ago Jane had the privilege of attending the official opening of the Morecambe FC Community Foundation Veterans Sanctuary at the West End and Heysham North Allotments.

The ribbon was cut by Mrs Amanda Parker JP, His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire, with The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Lancaster, Councillor Colin Hartley, also in attendance.

The Veterans Sanctuary has been created as a welcoming outdoor space where veterans can spend time together, enjoy gardening, build friendships and support their wellbeing.

We're particularly proud to have played a small part in the project through the Morecambe Bay Wills Community Fund. Last year, the project received a £250 grant from the fund, helping to support the work being carried out for veterans in our local community.

At Morecambe Bay Wills, we believe in giving back to the communities we serve, and it was wonderful to see first-hand the positive impact this project is already having.

Thank you to everyone involved in bringing the Veterans Sanctuary to life, and for creating such a valuable space for local veterans.

Sometimes it's the little things...

Jane sent this photo to our team WhatsApp recently with the message:

"Sometimes on a very wet day I take slippers with me so the client doesn't have wet shoes everywhere. It's the little touches that make us special!" 🤣

And honestly, this message and photo really do sum up our approach.

Of course, we're there to help with Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and estate planning, but we're also there to make things as comfortable and straightforward as possible for the people we meet.

Whether that's taking the time to explain things clearly, visiting people in their own homes, working around individual circumstances, or simply thinking ahead on a rainy day, we believe good service is often found in the smallest details.

The slippers may not be standard issue... but the thought behind them certainly is.

Making a Will isn’t morbid — it’s one of the kindest things you can do.

Sometimes when we think about making a Will, we focus on money or property.

But for parents, a Will is about something far more important.

Whether you have a newborn at home or a house full of teenagers, having a Will in place allows you to make one of the most important decisions a parent can make — who would care for your children if the worst were to happen.

Many people delay making a Will because they feel they don’t have much to leave. Perhaps you’re renting, or there isn’t much equity in your home, or you don’t have significant savings.

But making a Will isn’t just about assets. It’s about protecting your family and making sure your wishes are clear.

If guardians for children under 18 are not named in a Will and something happens to both parents, the decision about who cares for those children may be made by the courts. That decision may not reflect what you would have wanted.

Setting out your wishes in a Will ensures that the people you trust most are the ones who will step in to care for your children.

We also understand that making a Will can feel emotional and difficult. Thinking about those “what if” scenarios is never easy, particularly when it involves your children.

But many parents tell us that once it is done, they feel a real sense of peace of mind knowing they have made those decisions and protected their family.

WE WILL SURVIVE... JUST ABOUT! 😄

Last week, the Morecambe Bay Wills team swapped Wills, Powers of Attorney and paperwork for sandpaper, paintbrushes and a healthy dose of elbow grease as Nicola, Janet, Jane, Sue and Andrea spent the day volunteering at Unique Kidz & Co

There was sanding. Then a bit more sanding. Followed by some additional sanding... and just when we thought we'd finished, there was even more sanding!

Thankfully, there was also plenty of music, a little bit of dancing, lots of laughter and, thanks to the soundtrack of the day, a very fitting rendition of I Will Survive.

We're pleased to report that everyone survived, although a few arms may have been feeling it the next morning!

On a more serious note, it was a privilege to spend time supporting a charity that does such incredible work for children, young people and families across our community. Unique Kidz & Co provides opportunities, support and experiences that make a real difference to so many local families, and we're proud to play a small part in helping them continue that work.

A huge thank you to the team for making us feel so welcome. We had a fantastic day and we're already looking forward to the next opportunity to get involved.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at Unique Kidz & Co for our recent free information evening.

It was wonderful to see so many parents, carers and family members taking the time to come along and learn more about Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and planning for the future. These conversations aren't always easy, but they are some of the most important conversations we can have to protect the people we care about most.

A special thank you to the fantastic team at Unique Kidz & Co for hosting the event and for everything they do to support families across our community. We were incredibly touched by their kind words:

Why do we support Morecambe FC Community Foundation's Veterans Project?

At Morecambe Bay Wills, we believe that nobody who has served their country should feel isolated or unsupported. The Veterans Project creates opportunities for former Armed Forces personnel, serving personnel and their families to come together, build friendships and access support in a welcoming environment. From coffee mornings and digital skills support to football, bowling and gardening projects, the initiative helps improve both physical and mental wellbeing while strengthening community connections.

We are particularly proud to support a project that recognises the importance of belonging. Whether it's helping someone learn new digital skills, providing a space to share experiences with others who understand military life, or simply offering a friendly conversation over a cup of tea, the Veterans Project is making a genuine difference to lives across our local area. It's exactly the kind of community-focused work that deserves to be celebrated and supported.

You may have heard that a couple can pass on £1 million without inheritance tax.
That can be true.

But it’s not automatic — and it depends on how things are set up.
Here’s how it works in practice:
Each person has a £325,000 nil-rate band.
That can be passed to a spouse and combined — giving £650,000.
There is also an additional £175,000 residence nil-rate band per person —but this only applies if:
• You pass your main home to direct descendants (such as children or grandchildren)
• Your estate is within certain limits (it can reduce for larger estates)

When both allowances apply fully, a couple can potentially pass on up to £1 million free of inheritance tax.
But there are important conditions.
We often see situations where:
• A Will hasn’t been structured to make full use of the allowances
• Assets don’t pass in a way that qualifies for the residence allowance
• Estates exceed the thresholds where allowances begin to taper
• Previous arrangements mean allowances haven’t been preserved
In those cases, the £1 million figure doesn’t apply in the way people expect.
This isn’t about complexity for the sake of it. It’s about making sure that what you believe will happen… actually does.
