Most people have heard of a discretionary trust. Far fewer understand what one actually does, or whether it would work for their family.

Our latest article cuts through the jargon. We explain how these structures work, why families use them, what the tax position looks like (including the significant changes now in effect following April 2026), and when a discretionary trust might not be the right answer.

There are also important points for anyone with farming or business assets: the reforms to Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief have materially changed how trusts interact with succession planning, and the transitional rules are complex.

If your estate plan has not been reviewed recently, now is a good time.

Many people assume a Lasting Power of Attorney is something to think about later in life. The reality is that the best time to set one up is well before you need it.

An LPA is a legal document that lets you appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf, whether about your finances and property or your health and welfare, if you ever lose the capacity to do so yourself. Crucially, you must have mental capacity at the time of making it, which is why early planning matters so much.

Without an LPA in place, even close family members have no automatic legal authority to act for you. If something unexpected happens, they would need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as deputies, a process that can be lengthy, costly and stressful for everyone involved.

Our latest article covers the two types of LPA, when to consider setting them up, common misconceptions, and what happens once yours is registered.

Losing someone is one of the hardest experiences anyone goes through. Knowing what to do next should not add to that burden.

Our latest article walks you through the practical legal steps to take in the first 30 days after a loved one dies, from registering the death and locating a will, to notifying banks and beginning the probate process.

It will not make grief easier. But it may make the paperwork a little less overwhelming.

We are absolutely delighted to share that our clients, through the Cancer Research UK UK Will Writing Service, have collectively pledged close to £900,000 to fund life-saving cancer research. What an extraordinary achievement.

For 24 years, our Wills and Probate team has helped Cancer Research UK supporters put plans in place for their families, while also choosing to leave a gift that will make a difference long after they are gone. 200 clients. 24 years. £900,000. We couldn't be more proud.

Rebecca Lauder, who leads the team, says it best: "Knowing that the work we carry out has contributed to nearly £900,000 in pledged gifts is humbling. We are proud to play a small part in something so significant."

Gifts in wills fund more than a third of Cancer Research UK's entire annual income, the income behind the research that has helped double cancer survival rates in the UK over the past 50 years. Our clients are part of that story.

If you'd like to write or update your will and want to explore leaving a gift to Cancer Research UK, we'd love to hear from you.

Are you a grandparent who has lost contact with your grandchildren? You are not alone, and there are legal options available to you.

In England, grandparents have no automatic right to see their grandchildren, but that does not mean you are without recourse. Our latest article explains the steps you can take, from mediation through to applying to the family court, and what the court will consider when making its decision.

If this is something you or someone you know is going through, it is worth understanding your options sooner rather than later.
