Our founder Sophie had a call last week with someone who started by saying, 'I'm probably overthinking this, but...'

By the end of the conversation, it turned out they weren't overthinking at all. They had a genuine concern that needed addressing, and they left the call with a clear plan and a huge sense of relief.

It's why she built Law by Sophie the way she did so people could reach out without feeling like they're committing to anything, without worrying about being judged for not knowing the 'right' questions to ask.

The one who got into law because they actually wanted to help people, and somewhere along the way that got buried under targets and politics and a culture that rewards hours over outcomes?

Last night, our founder Sophie had the privilege of attending a charity dinner in support of Cash for Kids, organised by the brilliant David Smith at Forethought Financial.

Cash for Kids is a grant-giving charity dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK, from tackling poverty and illness to supporting those with additional needs. What makes it even more special is their "Raised Local, Stays Local" promise, so every pound raised in our community goes directly back to children in our community.

A huge thank you to David and everyone at Forethought Financial for pulling together such a wonderful evening.

Ariana joined us as our paralegal a year ago!

She's studying at Sheffield University and we're supporting her through that, because if we're going to do law differently, it starts with how we bring the next wave through.

We asked our founder Sophie for a memorable moment from the past year...

"It was the day before Chester Races and I needed a spray tan. I asked Ariana if she'd be happy to spray tan me, and I'd return the favour if she fancied one too. Whilst tanning, I asked her what she'd learnt so far at Law by Sophie, and she replied... that her boss asks her to stand in her underwear in a tent."

Ariana, you've handled everything this job has thrown at you with professionalism, good humour, and apparently a very high tolerance for our founder's beauty regimes.

No six-minute billing units. No recording every phone call, every email, every time you nipped to the loo and wondered if it counted as billable.

No targets pinned to your name on a spreadsheet. No monthly review where someone tells you you're 0.3 hours short of your KPI.

No clocking in. No clocking out. No getting a look if you walk through the door at 9:02.

Buying or selling a horse should be exciting. But without the right paperwork, it can turn into an absolute nightmare.

Sophie recently worked with a client who'd sold a horse months earlier. Everything seemed fine until the buyer claimed the horse had an undisclosed health issue and demanded their money back despite a pre-purchase vetting and a clear bill of health at the time of sale.

The problem? No proper sale agreement. No documented vetting results. No written record of what was disclosed and when. It became a case of he-said-she-said, and the client was facing potential legal action over a sale that should have been straightforward.

If you're in the equine world, you know how much emotion and money goes into these transactions. A proper sale agreement protects everyone buyer, the the seller, and horse. It's not about distrust, it's about clarity.

This morning I tacked my horse up, hacked out for an hour, and cleared my head before starting work.

No one shouted at me for being late. No one clocked me in. No one sent a passive-aggressive email about my diary.

I just... went riding.

And then I came home, made a drink, and got on with it.

This is what Law by Sophie is built on. The belief that you can do excellent legal work and still have a life. That flexibility isn't a perk, it's the point.

Our founder Sophie had a conversation this week that reminded her why she does this work.

A potential client rang about what they thought was a massive legal problem. Turns out, after talking it through, they didn't need a solicitor at all just some practical guidance and reassurance about their rights.

Did Sophie take the case anyway? No.
Did she signpost them to the right resources and send them on their way feeling clearer? Absolutely.

This is what legal support should look like. Not every conversation needs to turn into a client. Not every concern requires formal proceedings. Sometimes people just need someone who knows the law to tell them straight: you're fine, here's why, and here's what to do next.

Law by Sophie is built on the belief that doing right by people matters more than maximising billable hours.

Our founder Sophie met with Roger a representative from the CLA the Country Land and Business Association one of the UK's most established membership organisations, representing over 28,000 rural landowners, farmers, estates, and rural businesses across England and Wales.

They shared roots in farming, a real understanding of rural life, and a genuine alignment on where both organisations are headed.

The CLA's members already face complex legal questions around grazing licences, land management, and rural property and Sophie's specialist knowledge is exactly the kind of support that the community deserves.
