Not every child support dispute is solved by the Child Maintenance Service.

When parents were never married, one parent earns very well, and a child's needs go beyond basic monthly maintenance, Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989 becomes the missing piece.

This jurisdiction allows the court to tailor financial provision to a child's realities. The court can order periodical payments beyond the statutory maximum, lump sums to cover specific needs, such as educational costs or birth-related expenses, and housing provision – typically held for the child's benefit and reverting to the paying parent once the child reaches adulthood.
