Celebrating 30 years with Michelle! 🎉

We’re thrilled to celebrate another incredible 30-year milestone at Gosschalks!

Michelle began her journey with the firm in debt collection on behalf of clients before moving into our Accounts team. Its safe to say, she’s become a much-loved and valued member of the team, known for her hard work, friendly nature and the relationships she’s built over the years.

Outside of credit control, Michelle regularly puts her baking skills to good use, supporting our charity bake sales, enjoys a trip to the theatre and is certainly no stranger to letting her hair down at the Christmas party!

Join us in congratulating Michelle on 30 fantastic years with the firm - and thank you for all the hard work, laughs and memories along the way!

Having worked with our Commercial team for years, one client recently came to Mark Reeves and our Family Law team for support with their divorce, After working with us, they wished they had come to Gosschalks from the outset. Huge congratulations to Danielle Kennedy and James Messenger on qualifying as Solicitors!

We’re delighted to celebrate this fantastic milestone for Danielle and James as they officially begin the next chapter of their legal careers with us.

Danielle joined the firm in October 2024 to begin her Period of Recognised Training after graduating from the University of Hull with a First-Class Law degree in 2023 and passing SQE1. Since joining our Commercial Property team, she has continued to build on her strong academic foundations, developing her skills, knowledge and experience along the way. Qualifying through the SQE and QWE route is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the hard work and commitment she has shown throughout her training.

James’ route into law has been rather different. After studying Ancient History at the University of Nottingham and King’s College London, he spent several years working in retail before deciding to take his career in a new direction. Following a law conversion course, James joined us as a trainee team in October 2024. Two years later, he has successfully completed his SQE and QWE and qualified as a Solicitor in our Company / Commercial team.

Both Danielle and James have shown real dedication and commitment throughout their training, and we’re incredibly proud of everything they have achieved.

We’re so pleased to see them continue their careers with us as qualified Solicitors and can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for them both!

Meet the expert: Adam Riley

As part of our Licensed Leisure & Retail team within our Commercial Property department, Adam specialises in:

• All property related elements of licensed leisure and hospitality;
• Estate management, including landlord and tenant matters
• Freehold and leasehold acquisitions and disposals for individual and portfolio purchases/sales
• Acquisitions and disposals for development and alternative use

Having joined us as a trainee in 2010 he soon qualified as a solicitor in 2012. Since then, he has built extensive experience advising clients across a broad range of commercial property matters.

Praised for his ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to fast-changing demands, Adam takes a practical and responsive approach to his work, building strong relationships with his clients along the way.

Payment provisions matter.

The recent decision in Deerns UK Ltd v VDC provides another important reminder that payment provisions in construction contracts must be drafted clearly and carefully.

The case also highlights that the Construction Act 1996 may not always accommodate commercial pragmatism where contractual payment mechanisms have not been properly structured.
