A travesty for justice if jury trials are done away with due to COVID-19. No one for one minute believes it would be temporary as successive governments have wanted to get rid of them for years as they are both more expensive and the conviction rate is lower compared to those held before a judge or magistrate. But years of conducting jury trials and summary trials by judges in magistrates court tell me that I would much prefer a jury trial despite its short falls any day. The real reason for the current backlog is nothing to do with COVID-19 but public policy over the last decade closing courts and reducing judge sitting times to save money in times of austerity. This is just an excuse. Either-way offences cover a multitude of types of offences from dishonesty to s*x offences with sentences up to 14 years in many instances. This does not merely cover low level offending.
