Over the years, I have supported individuals navigating family and civil proceedings who require clear, structured legal support, particularly where instructing a traditional law firm is not viable or proportionate.

I am Maria Lopez LLB (Hons), a legally qualified legal professional, acting as a Lawyer–McKenzie Friend, assisting litigants in person across England and Wales. My work focuses on procedural guidance, thorough preparation, and calm, informed engagement with the court process. I am a Resolution Associate Member and ICO registered.

I regularly assist in matters including divorce and financial disputes, child arrangements, injunctions, social services involvement, parental responsibility, wills, and civil litigation. My approach is practical, measured, and experience-led.

I also welcome professional connections and referrals from solicitors, mediators, counsellors, charities, and other practitioners who encounter individuals in need of structured legal and procedural support outside the scope of reserved legal activities.

Always a pleasure to return to my old University of Staffordshire! Playing the role of District Judge for the Community Justice Pre-Sentence Report was a fantastic experience, and it is great to see students engaging so professionally in these immersive assessments.

A huge thank you to Louis Martin my favourite lecturer and now good friend, for the opportunity. These practical assessments truly take learning beyond the classroom and prepare students for real-world challenges in the justice system!

Back in Stoke-on-Trent dealing with a FDR hearing today.
Then visiting the Law School at Staffordshire University and meeting the new buildings, it is such a long time since I was here and, having a good debrief conversation with my former personal tutor Louis Martin brought back to the law student chapter memories.

The increase in cuts to legal aid over recent years has meant that thousands more people face the civil or family courts alone because they cannot afford to pay solicitors and Barristers fees. Their access to justice is limited by how overwhelming the legal system can be to those who have never faced it before, and many struggle to represent themselves effectively in court.

According to the research commissioned by - First for Family Law 57% represented themselves - an increase of 35% in the last 5 years.
