𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆?

It's support from someone who isn't legally qualified but who helps a person express their wishes, understand their options and be properly heard. For parents, that often means support through Child in Need and Child Protection meetings, Family Group Conferences and, where appropriate, family court proceedings.

It works alongside a solicitor, not in place of one.

There's a lot of confusing information about Lasting Powers of Attorney, particularly around what the person appointed can and can't actually do.

A few things worth knowing:

A Lasting Power of Attorney has to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used.

For health and welfare, the person appointed can only make a decision when you lack the capacity to make that decision yourself.

Every decision must be made in your best interests.

And some decisions, such as marriage or voting, can never be made on your behalf.

We can also complete assessments of capacity to make a Lasting Power of Attorney.

Can a parent refer themselves for advocacy support?

You're welcome to call us directly to ask questions and find out more. Support itself has to be commissioned by a local authority, solicitor or the court, so that call is usually the start of the conversation rather than a referral on its own.

Where a parent already has a solicitor, a lay advocate can offer extra support: helping them understand paperwork, prepare for meetings and communicate clearly when things feel overwhelming.
