When someone dies, most of the attention goes on the will. But sometimes the bigger question is what happened before it.

Maybe the house was signed over to one child a year before they passed away. Or large sums left their account in the months before their death, and you only found out when the estate was valued.

A will only covers what someone owns when they die, so challenging the will won't bring those assets back. It's the gift itself that needs challenging.

Our latest blog covers the main grounds, including mental capacity and undue influence, plus who can bring a claim and what evidence helps.

A Lasting Power of Attorney is meant to protect someone when they can no longer manage their own affairs. Most attorneys do the job honestly.

But sometimes, when a loved one dies and the bank statements finally come to light, families find money has gone missing or been moved into the attorney's own account.

Signs worth asking about include large transfers to the attorney or their family, unexplained cash withdrawals, and care fees going unpaid while money leaves the account.

Our latest blog explains what an attorney can and can't do, and the steps you can take both before and after your loved one has died.

We won! IDR Law has taken home the Best SME Company award at the Harrogate Business Awards 2026!

A huge congratulations to Erica and Sarah who represented the team on the night and brought the trophy home. We hear the host's Q&A was quite the moment too!

IDR Law was founded in Harrogate and the town has been at the heart of everything we have built. To be recognised by the local business community means a great deal to everyone in the team.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us. Another one for the cabinet!

What happens if someone named in a will passes away before they actually receive their inheritance? It's more common than you'd think, and the answer isn't always straightforward.

It all comes down to how the will is worded, whether the gift is treated as "lapsed," and whether a survivorship clause applies (a common condition requiring the beneficiary to outlive the person who made the will by a set period, often 28 days).

Our latest blog breaks it all down, including what happens when a gift is left to "my children" or "my grandchildren," and why these situations can so easily turn into family disputes.

What a couple of days! ๐ŸŽ‰ Last week the whole IDR Law team came together at Rudding Park in Harrogate for our annual Away Days, talks, a legendary team game hosted by Stephen Lawson, some brilliant coaching on quieting that inner critic, and plenty of time to properly connect as a team (golf and spa included!).

Culture is easy to talk about and much harder to build. We think we've got something special at IDR Law, and this week proved it all over again.

Our latest piece breaks down the most common ways executors end up personally liable, and the simple steps that help protect you. Well worth a read if you've been asked to take on the role, or you're already knee-deep in it.

Lived abroad for years? That doesn't rule out an inheritance claim.

A lot of people assume that if a parent or relative spent years, or even decades, living overseas, there's nothing they can do if they've been left out of a will or feel they weren't provided for.

That's not necessarily true.

What actually matters is something called domicile, not where someone was living when they died. Domicile is about where a person considered their true, permanent home over the course of their life, and it's entirely possible to live abroad for decades and still be domiciled in England or Wales.

Why does this matter? Because it's domicile, not where someone was living, that decides whether a claim can be brought under UK law.

Domicile can also come down to evidence, things like property ownership, family ties, and how long someone actually spent settled somewhere. It's not always as clear cut as it sounds.

If you're not sure where you stand, our free Claim Checker tool can give you an instant answer in just a few minutes, with no obligation.
