Thinking about a prenuptial agreement?

In our latest episode of ‘There Are Some Things Certain in Life’, Ross and Steven discuss the importance of both parties having their own independent legal advice before signing prenups and other important documents, even when everyone’s on the same page.

Without it, the agreement can be challenged later if one party didn’t get proper advice.

If you’re looking to write a prenuptial agreement, our team of experienced family law solicitors are here to help.

Thinking about who should handle your personal injury claim? Here’s why Jones Whyte is the right choice.

A client came to us after a whiplash injury. The insurers’ initial offer was capped at £5,000 - but we believed their claim was worth more. We encouraged the client to raise court proceedings where we negotiated a settlement figure of just under £8,000.

This is a great example of what accurate claim valuation and confident, well-reasoned advice can do for a client.

Property valuations for inheritance tax are under more scrutiny than ever. HMRC referred 23.5% more cases to the Valuation Office Agency in the year to September 2025 than the year before.

With property prices rising while the £325,000 nil-rate band has stayed frozen since 2009, more estates are being pulled into scope than ever.

For executors, that means a valuation that looks reasonable isn't always enough. HMRC is checking figures more closely, and a dispute over an undervalued property can delay an estate for months.

Our latest blog covers what this means in practice. It looks at how to get a valuation that will hold up, what documentation to keep, and which reliefs to claim before you submit, including the residence nil-rate band, worth up to £175,000, or up to £1 million combined for married couples and civil partners. It also covers what to do if a property later sells for more than it was valued at.

Ricky Gervais has been with Jane Fallon for 44 years. According to reports this week, he's only now planning to marry her, and by his own admission, it's not for romance. It's for inheritance tax.

In the UK, assets left to a spouse or civil partner are exempt from inheritance tax. Unmarried partners don't get that same protection, no matter how long they've been together or how shared their lives are.

If you're not married or in a civil partnership, your estate isn't automatically protected the way you might assume. A properly drafted Will can make sure the people who matter to you are looked after, whatever your relationship status.

Estate planning isn't just for the wealthy or the elderly. It's for anyone who wants certainty over what happens to what they've built.

A High Court ruling this year has changed what surrogates can be paid in the UK, and it affects the cost of surrogacy for everyone involved.

Can intended parents pay a surrogate more than her "reasonable expenses"? Following a landmark case, the answer is often yes.

In recent case A & B v C & D, the court confirmed that a child's welfare comes first. No parental order has ever been refused just because payments were too high.

But there's a catch. In PQ v Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, the court ruled that surrogacy payments can affect a surrogate's benefits, putting some surrogates at risk of having to repay money.

Two 2026 rulings. Two very different risks, depending on which side of the arrangement you're on.

Family lawyer Lynsey Brown breaks down what you need to know:
• What counts as a "reasonable expense"
• How to record payments for court
• What it means if you're an intended parent
• What it means if you're a surrogate on benefits

Inherited wealth isn't always protected in a divorce, and most people don't realise this until it's too late. The moment inherited money is mixed with shared finances, like paying off a joint mortgage, it can become part of the "matrimonial pot" and be up for division.

Find out more in our latest episode of There Are Some Things Certain in Life, where Ross and Steven discuss what can happen to you inherited assets in the event of divorce.
