The Autumn Budget will take place on 28 October 2026 — and for anyone thinking about protecting their family and passing on their wealth, it is a timely reminder to review their lifetime planning.

We don’t yet know everything the Budget will contain, and good estate planning shouldn’t be based on speculation.

What we do know is that the landscape is changing.

From April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be brought within an individual’s estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. For some families, this could significantly change their potential Inheritance Tax position and the way they think about passing wealth to the next generation.

Lifetime planning is about much more than simply making a Will.

It means looking at your affairs as a whole — your Will, Lasting Powers of Attorney, pensions, property, trusts, family circumstances and potential Inheritance Tax exposure — and considering whether the arrangements you have in place still achieve what you want them to.

With further announcements expected in the October Budget, now is a sensible time to review your arrangements rather than waiting until the rules change.

At LRA Law, I provide bespoke lifetime and estate planning advice tailored to you and your family.

!!!⚖️ Proposed Changes to Inheritance Rights for Unmarried Couples ⚖️!!!

The Government is currently consulting on proposals that could significantly change the legal position of unmarried couples in England and Wales.

Many people are surprised to learn that there is currently no such thing as a “common law spouse”. If an unmarried partner dies without a Will, their surviving partner does not automatically inherit from their estate, regardless of how long they have lived together.

The proposals under consideration could give certain cohabiting couples rights that are closer to those enjoyed by married couples and civil partners, including:

• Potential inheritance rights where a partner dies without a Will.
• Easier access to financial provision from a deceased partner’s estate.
• Greater legal protection for long-term cohabiting partners.

At present, these are only proposals and the law has not changed. However, the consultation highlights the increasing recognition of modern family arrangements and the difficulties faced by many unmarried couples.

In the meantime, the best way to protect your partner remains to have an up-to-date Will in place. Without one, the current intestacy rules may not provide for your partner as you expect.

If you are living with a partner and would like advice on Wills, estate planning or protecting your loved ones, please get in touch.

10 years this year marks not only a professional milestone for me (having been admitted to the roll of Solicitors in England & Wales in 2015) but a personal one too.

This year I will be 10 years cancer free and so will my mum, having both been diagnosed in the same year.

To celebrate these milestones, I am making it my mission this year to do as much charity work as I can and, as part of that, I am going to be taking part in the Northwest Cancer Care Conference on Sunday 13th July 2025 providing free lifetime planning advice to those who need it.
