When a Blood Clot Causes a Stroke: DVT and CVST Explained

Not all strokes caused by blood clots happen in the way you might expect.

Our Medical Negligence insight explores Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST), including:
• The symptoms to be aware of
• How these conditions can be diagnosed and treated
• When a delayed or missed diagnosis could potentially amount to medical negligence

Stroke During Pregnancy: Warning Signs and Early Treatment

Symptoms such as severe headaches, visual disturbances and raised blood pressure can be important warning signs and should be carefully assessed by healthcare professionals.

"Jo Parry's attention to detail, together with her empathy and understanding relieved the potential stresses of an unfortunate situation I found myself in. I had total faith in her and thanks to her professionalism, guidance and knowledge throughout I was able to come to a most successful and happy result and conclusion. To have someone on your team (irrespective of circumstances and severity of case) that truly has the desire to help and the tools is a godsend. A difficult situation was handled supremely well and Jo was a complete credit to herself and the company. Thank you."

HMRC inheritance tax investigations are on the rise, with thousands of estates facing increased scrutiny.

Common issues include undervalued property, missing records of gifts and undeclared overseas assets.

A TIA: the warning stroke that should never be ignored

A transient ischaemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a “mini-stroke”, can cause symptoms that disappear within minutes or hours. But feeling better afterwards does not mean the danger has passed.

Symptoms can include:

- Sudden weakness or numbness, particularly on one side
- Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
- Sudden loss or blurred vision
- Dizziness or loss of balance
- Sudden confusion

A TIA is a medical emergency and can be a warning that a more serious stroke may follow. Prompt assessment and treatment can provide an important opportunity to reduce that risk.

Our latest insight explores the importance of recognising and urgently investigating a TIA, and when missed opportunities to diagnose or treat the underlying cause could potentially amount to medical negligence.

When should a charity challenge a Will?

For charities, legacy income can be an important source of funding. But when a Will is disputed, trustees must carefully consider whether taking legal action is the right course.

Our latest insight looks at the important Court of Appeal decision in RSPCA v Sharp and the factors charities should consider before initiating a Will dispute - from potential financial returns and legal costs to reputational risks and the possibility of mediation.

The key message? Charities should not be deterred from bringing a legitimate claim, but each case needs to be assessed carefully and supported by specialist legal advice.
