Today is World Preeclampsia Day.

Preeclampsia is a serious condition that can affect women during pregnancy, most often after 20 weeks, but sometimes shortly after birth. While it’s commonly linked to high blood pressure and protein in the urine, the symptoms aren’t always obvious and can easily be mistaken for typical pregnancy discomfort.

Raising awareness matters. Preeclampsia can develop quickly and, in some cases, have life-changing consequences for both mother and baby.

Understanding the signs and seeking advice early can make all the difference.

Meningitis Outbreak - Concerns Over Delayed Reporting Following the Kent Outbreak

The recent BBC report on delays in reporting suspected meningitis cases during the Kent outbreak raises serious patient safety and legal concerns.

Meningitis is a fast-moving, potentially life-threatening condition where every moment matters. That is why meningitis B is legally classified as an urgent notifiable disease, requiring suspected cases to be reported immediately without waiting for lab confirmation.

According to the report, there was a two-day delay before the UK Health Security Agency was notified. During that time, vital opportunities may have been missed to trace close contacts, provide preventative treatment, and inform the public.

In serious cases like this, timely reporting is not just best practice but a legal and professional responsibility.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

As continues, our medical negligence team want to highlight the importance of knowing the symptoms of bowel cancer.

The recent changes to bowel cancer screening aims to increase early diagnosis, but recognising symptoms yourself is an important step in the process.

Look out for:

- Bleeding from your bottom
- Blood in your poo
- A change in how often you poo, or regularly having diarrhoea or constipation
- Losing weight but you’re unsure why
- Feeling very tired all the time
- A pain or lump in your tummy

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to speak to your GP. They can talk you through your concerns and arrange for a test to be sent to your home.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

With the recent changes to bowel cancer screenings aiming to identify potential cases earlier, it’s important to understand why raising awareness of early diagnosis matters.

Bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK, but it is treatable and often curable if diagnosed early. Follow up studies in 2021 showed that 90% of people with stage 1 bowel cancer would survive their cancer for 5 years or more after diagnosis demonstrating that early intervention is key to improving prognosis.

To find out more about the recent changes to the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and to understand the longer-term impact of these changes, read the latest insight from Medical Negligence Solicitor, Emily Wright, below: 👇

Esme’s Story – Living with HIE

Our client Esme was born with Grade 3 Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE), a serious oxygen deprivation at birth. Thanks to swift medical care, Esme avoided the most severe outcomes, but subtle cognitive challenges emerged as she developed.

With support from her family, speech and language therapists, and private tutors, Esme began to overcome early difficulties. At 8 years old, her mother sought help from Tozers to explore whether these challenges were linked to her birth injury. Following expert investigation, the hospital trust admitted liability, allowing Esme to access crucial therapies, educational support, and specialist guidance during adolescence.

While the journey is ongoing, the legal claim has provided reassurance to her family that Esme’s difficulties are real and that she will receive the support she needs to thrive.

This story highlights the difference early intervention, expert care, and legal advocacy can make in helping children with birth injuries reach their potential.

As today marks , our Medical Negligence Team want to join Peeps - HIE in raising awareness of Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE).

As a diagnosis of HIE can be frightening for new parents, organisations like Peeps offer vital support and resources to parents, families and friends of those affected by the injury, striving to ensure no one experiences their journey alone.

Partner and Solicitor Clair Hemming has put together an insight about HIE, where you can find out more about the symptoms, the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment and potential long term effects. Please see link below: 👇

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

Bowel Cancer can be hard to spot early, but catching it sooner can save lives. Did you know that, since February 2026, the NHS has lowered the levels that trigger further investigation in bowel cancer screening?

This is good news and means that even smaller amounts of blood in stool will now trigger further checks.

This change could:
- Help detect more cancers early
- Identify high-risk polyps before they develop into cancer
- Align England with screening standards in Wales and Scotland

For more information about the testing process and longer term impact of these changes to the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, read our insight by Medical Negligence Solicitor, Emily Wright: 👇

A major independent investigation into maternity and neonatal services in England has published an interim report detailing consistent and widespread concerns about the safety, quality and equity of care provided to women, babies and families.

The report, led by Baroness Valerie Amos, reflects evidence from over 8,000 individuals and more than 400 family members.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of World Kidney Day.

This year’s campaign is ‘Kidney Health for All: Caring for people, protecting the planet’, highlighting the importance of prevention, early detection, and greener therapies to protect both kidney health and the environment.

Diabetes is a major risk factor for kidney disease, affecting around 1 in 3 people with diabetes. However, kidney disease often develops without clear symptoms in its early stages, meaning tests are essential to detect problems.

If you are diagnosed with diabetes, your blood and urine should be tested at least once a year to check how well your kidneys are working. Despite this, a UK survey in 2020 found that urine tests were often missed.

Early diagnosis and improved treatment can help reduce cases of kidney disease, slow its progression, and prevent further kidney damage.

Unfortunately, even when people access appropriate care, delays in treatment or misinterpreted results can sometimes occur. If you or a loved one have concerns about kidney disease diagnosis or treatment that may have resulted in harm, our medical negligence team may be able to help.
