Fighting cancer is hard enough. Hospital parking shouldn't make it harder. Hospital parking charges can place an additional burden on patients and families at an already difficult time.

In this short explainer, I cover the difference between private Parking Charge Notices and council penalties, where patients can seek help and how the Equality Act 2010 is relevant to cancer patients.

If you receive a hospital parking charge you believe is unfair, don't assume you have no options. Know your rights. Win your fights.

Imagine being blocked by Currys for helping too many of its customers with complaints. πŸ˜‚

I'll take that as an accolade and a compliment!

As Black Friday and Christmas shopping approaches, please for the love of God, look at the replies and complaints on their X account and choose a proper retailer.

🧠 World Mental Health Day

On World Mental Health Day, here's my advice regarding third-party debt collectors chasing alleged debts owed to private parking operators.

Nobody ever needs to engage with third-party debt collectors sending begging letters trying to enforce an alleged debt owed to a parking operator.

A scary letter with logos doesn't give them magical powers. They have NO enforcement powers. Ignore, don't engage.

The only letter that needs a response is a Letter Before Claim or court papers as it's a precursor to court action.

Know the difference between pressure tactics and genuine legal action. Protect your peace of mind.

Know your rights. Win your fights.

πŸ“Ί On BBC Breakfast this morning, speaking up for cancer patients facing the added stress of hospital parking charges.

Nobody battling cancer should have to battle unfair parking charges too.

πŸ’‘ Know your rights: If you receive a hospital parking charge, contact PALS and ask the hospital to intervene.

The Equality Act 2010 also require reasonable adjustments for disabled patients.

Thanks to the BBC team for having me on alongside Macmillan Cancer Support.

Do you remember your first car? I remember mine well, complete with a manual choke! Great to be featured in the The Yorkshire Post this weekend as part of Steve Teale's My First Car series, taking a trip down memory lane.

What was your first car?

😊 It's World Smile Day.

And there's nothing quite like the smile you get when a company admits they got it wrong. I've seen it countless times with consumers who have spent weeks or months being fobbed off, only for the complaint to finally be resolved.

You just need to know your rights, stick to the facts & refuse to give up. Perseverance breaks resistance. What's the best result you've ever had from a complaint?

πŸš— Paid for the parking but still got a PCN.

The car was slightly over a faded bay line, with less than half a wheel crossing the marking.

The council rejected the appeal.

But that isn't necessarily the end of the story.

I've tackled this one in my latest Ask The Experts for The Sunday Times, looking at faded parking bay markings, council discretion, proportionality, the appeals process and the legal principle of 'de minimis non curat lex' - the law does not concern itself with trifles.

My view? Don't automatically assume a rejected first appeal means you should just pay.

Know the rules. Gather the evidence. Challenge decisions where there's a proper basis to do so.

Know your rights. Win your fights.

Real-life footage on how I responded to this complaint today.

Two cars. One Nissan dealership. An almighty paperwork problem.

πŸ”΄ Brake pads supposedly 85% worn
πŸ”΄ Customer says she asked for them checked, then was recorded as declining the work
πŸ”΄ MOT had no advisories
πŸ”΄ Another customer's name, address, email & registration appeared on her paperwork
πŸ”΄ A vehicle health check appears linked to the wrong customer

Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Data protection breaches.
Accuracy of records.

Now I want to know:

Who did what, when and how did two customers' vehicle records become mixed up?

All staff members identified and lined up for the firing squad now.

Letter on its way to the top brass and Nissan UK CEO.

πŸ“– October's issue of Candis Magazine has landed just in time for the weekend 😊

This month, I'm looking at faulty kitchens - one of the most common and costly complaints I see.

From damaged units and poor workmanship to warranties, independent fitters and retailers passing the buck, I explain your consumer rights, who is responsible when things go wrong and how to avoid some of the common traps.

I'm proud to serve as Consumer Editor for Candis, helping our readers, many of whom are elderly and vulnerable, understand their consumer rights and know what to do when things go wrong.
