Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher?

In the event of a small, developing fire, knowing what to do can make a real difference.

A simple way to remember the basic sequence is PASS:

๐Ÿ”ด P โ€“ PULL
Pull the safety pin to unlock the extinguisher.

๐Ÿ”ด A โ€“ AIM
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, rather than the flames.

๐Ÿ”ด S โ€“ SQUEEZE
Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguishing agent.

๐Ÿ”ด S โ€“ SWEEP
Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the base of the fire.

โš ๏ธ But rememberโ€ฆ

A fire extinguisher should only be used when it is appropriate for the type of fire, you have been appropriately trained/instructed, the fire is small and manageable, and you have a safe escape route behind you.

Never put yourself at unnecessary risk. If in doubt, evacuate, raise the alarm and call 999.

For businesses, having the right extinguishers isnโ€™t simply about having one on the wall. Their type, suitability, location, accessibility and maintenance should all form part of your fire safety arrangements.

At Goodman Fire Safety Ltd, we provide professional fire safety advice, Fire Risk Assessments and fire safety consultancy across Scotland.

๐Ÿ”ฅ GOODMAN FIRE SAFETY LTD โ€“ LOOKING FOR A UK-WIDE FIRE EXTINGUISHER SUPPLY PARTNER ๐Ÿ”ฅ

As Goodman Fire Safety Ltd continues to grow, I am looking to establish a long-term relationship with a reputable UK fire protection manufacturer, wholesaler or distributor who can support the ongoing supply of portable fire extinguishers and associated fire safety equipment.

I am particularly interested in hearing what companies can offer - competitive trade/contractor pricing and reliable nationwide supply for an independent fire safety business.

The equipment I am looking to source includes:

๐Ÿ”ด 9L Water Extinguishers
๐Ÿ”ด 6L Foam / Fluorine-Free Foam
๐Ÿ”ด 2kg COโ‚‚
๐Ÿ”ด 5kg COโ‚‚
๐Ÿ”ด 6kg ABC Dry Powder
๐Ÿ”ด 9kg ABC Dry Powder
๐Ÿ”ด 6L Wet Chemical
๐Ÿ”ด Fire Blankets
๐Ÿ”ด Wall Brackets
๐Ÿ”ด Extinguisher Identification Signage
๐Ÿ”ด Other associated fire protection equipment

Products would need to be appropriately certified and suitable for use in accordance with the relevant British Standards, including BS 5306-8 and the applicable requirements of the BS EN 3 series.

What Iโ€™m looking for from a supplier:

โœ… Genuine trade/contractor pricing
โœ… Competitive pricing for repeat orders and volume purchasing
โœ… Reliable UK-wide delivery
โœ… Consistent product availability
โœ… Established and reputable manufacturers
โœ… Product certification and technical documentation
โœ… Good lead times
โœ… Brackets, signage and associated equipment
โœ… A professional account manager/contact
โœ… Potential for a long-term supply relationship

Goodman Fire Safety Ltd undertakes fire risk assessments, fire safety reviews and associated fire safety services for businesses and organisations across Scotland, with plans to continue developing our service offering more widely.

Iโ€™m not looking for a one-off supplier for a single job. Iโ€™m looking to build a long-term relationship with a company that can grow alongside Goodman Fire Safety Ltd.

If you are a manufacturer, distributor or established fire protection supplier and believe your company could provide this service, Iโ€™d be very interested in having a conversation.

What would a fire actually cost your business?

When business owners think about fire safety, many focus on compliance or insurance requirements.

But the real question is:

What would a fire actually cost your business? The obvious answer is property damage.

A fire can destroy buildings, stock, equipment, and vital business assets in a matter of minutes, but the true cost often goes much further.

The hidden costs of a business fire beyond the immediate physical damage, a fire can result in:

Business downtime and lost revenue.

Damaged or destroyed stock.

Replacement of equipment and machinery.

Disruption to staff and operations.

Loss of customers and contracts.

Increased insurance costs.

Long-term reputational damage.

For many small businesses, these secondary costs can be even more devastating than the fire itself.

Could your business recover?

A serious fire can leave a business unable to trade for weeks or even months. Customers may go elsewhere, contracts can be lost, and rebuilding operations can be a lengthy and expensive process.

While every situation is different, for some businesses, the financial consequences can be devastating โ€” extending far beyond the cost of repairing the building.

The cost of prevention is small in comparison.

Now compare those potential costs with the price of a professional Fire Risk Assessment.

A Fire Risk Assessment helps identify hazards, assess risks, and highlight practical measures to protect your premises, employees, and customers.

It is one of the most cost-effective investments a business can make.

Don't Leave It Too Late!

Missing, neglecting, or failing to review your Fire Risk Assessment can expose your business to unnecessary risk.

If you operate a small office, salon, retail unit, workshop, or similar commercial premises, now is the time to ensure your fire safety arrangements are up to date.

At Goodman Fire Safety Ltd, we provide professional Fire Risk Assessments and practical fire safety advice to help businesses stay compliant and protected.

The cost of prevention is always less than the cost of recovery.

What happens if you donโ€™t have a Fire Risk Assessment?

A Fire Risk Assessment isnโ€™t simply a piece of paperwork to put in a folder.

For businesses and other non-domestic premises in Scotland, fire safety legislation places duties on the dutyholder to assess the risk of fire and put appropriate fire safety measures in place.

A recent Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) fire safety audit provides a good example of why this matters.

During the audit, SFRS identified that the premises required areas for improvement, including the fire risk assessment process.

But it didnโ€™t stop there.

Other issues identified included:

๐Ÿ”ด No available record of staff fire safety training or fire drills
๐Ÿ”ด Fire Action Notices missing
๐Ÿ”ด No available records for fire alarm testing/servicing
๐Ÿ”ด Emergency lighting testing and records requiring attention
๐Ÿ”ด Firefighting equipment requiring appropriate servicing and records
๐Ÿ”ด Improvements required to the positioning and availability of extinguishers

This demonstrates an important point:

A Fire Risk Assessment is the starting point โ€” not the finish line.

Having an FRA sitting in a drawer doesnโ€™t make a business fire safe.

The assessment needs to identify the hazards, evaluate the risks, establish appropriate controls and, importantly, the recommended actions need to be implemented and maintained.

What could happen if your fire safety arrangements arenโ€™t adequate?

Depending on the circumstances, you could face:

โš ๏ธ SFRS intervention and enforcement action
โš ๏ธ Prosecution for serious or persistent breaches
โš ๏ธ Financial penalties and legal costs
โš ๏ธ Disruption to your business
โš ๏ธ Increased risk to employees, customers and other occupants
โš ๏ธ Significant reputational damage following a serious fire

And perhaps most importantly:

If a fire occurs, inadequate fire safety arrangements can have consequences that go far beyond financial penalties.

Donโ€™t wait for an SFRS audit to discover gaps in your fire safety arrangements.

At Goodman Fire Safety Ltd, we provide independent, risk-based fire safety advice and Fire Risk Assessments for businesses and premises across Scotland.

Good fire safety isnโ€™t about ticking a box.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Bought Your Own Fire Extinguishers? Here's What Happens Next! ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Many people think buying fire extinguishers is the final step. In reality, it's just one part of your fire safety journey.
โœ… Step 1: Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) A Fire Risk Assessment identifies the fire risks in your premises and determines whether extinguishers are needed, what type is required, and where they should be located. 12
โœ… Step 2: Choose the Correct Extinguishers Not all extinguishers are the same: ๐Ÿ’ง Water - paper, wood & textiles โšซ COโ‚‚ - electrical fires ๐ŸŸก Foam - flammable liquids ๐ŸŸจ Wet Chemical - cooking oils & kitchens ๐Ÿ”ต Powder - multiple fire risks 3
โœ… Step 3: Installation & Commissioning Extinguishers should be installed in the correct locations, clearly visible, and recorded in your fire safety documentation.
โœ… Step 4: Training Having extinguishers is one thing. Knowing when and how to use them safely is another.
โœ… Step 5: Ongoing Maintenance Regular checks and annual servicing help ensure your extinguishers are ready when needed. 3
โœ… Step 6: Review Your FRA Fire safety is not a one-time exercise. Your FRA should be reviewed regularly and whenever significant changes occur. 12
๐Ÿšจ Remember: Fire extinguishers are there to support fire safety, but the foundation is always a suitable and sufficient Fire Risk Assessment.

๐Ÿ”ฅ SATURDAY FIRE SAFETY CHECK โ€” 5 MINUTES THAT COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Itโ€™s Saturday, so hereโ€™s a quick fire safety check you can do today.

You donโ€™t need to be a fire safety expert. Just walk around your workplace and ask yourself:

๐Ÿšช 1. Are your escape routes clear?
No stock, boxes, furniture, bins or equipment should obstruct the route to safety.

๐Ÿ”‘ 2. Can everyone get out quickly?
Check that final exit doors can be opened easily when the premises are occupied and that nobody is relying on a key that may not be immediately available.

๐Ÿšจ 3. Are your fire alarm and emergency lighting systems actually being maintained?
Having equipment installed is not the same as having a properly maintained fire safety system.

๐Ÿงฏ 4. Can you find your fire extinguishers?
They should be accessible, appropriately positioned and maintained โ€” not hidden behind stock or used as coat stands!

โšก 5. Look for obvious electrical hazards.
Damaged cables, overloaded sockets, unsuitable extension leads or electrical equipment showing signs of damage should not be ignored.

And one of the biggest questions:

๐Ÿ“‹ When was your Fire Risk Assessment last reviewed?

A Fire Risk Assessment shouldnโ€™t simply sit in a folder. It should reflect the actual premises, how it is being used, the people who may be at risk and the precautions currently in place.

For businesses in Scotland, fire safety is supported by specific Scottish legislation and guidance โ€” and responsibility ultimately rests with the relevant dutyholder.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Good fire safety isnโ€™t about ticking boxes.

Itโ€™s about identifying problems before they become emergencies.

Have a safe weekend.
