Four years ago, We became a Dream Maker for Children With Cancer Fund , and we are proud to still be supporting them today.

Our £25 monthly donation has now reached a total of £1,200, helping this wonderful local charity grant wishes and provide support for children with cancer and their families across East Sussex, Brighton and Hove.

A regular donation like this adds up to something meaningful over time, and it is a privilege to play a small part in the work the team does for families going through the hardest of times.

If your business is looking for a local cause to get behind, you can find out more about becoming a Dream Maker here: https://bit.ly/4hOT4Ed

We have just passed 400 reviews on Google, and we wanted to take a moment to say thank you 🎉

Behind every one of those reviews is a person who trusted us with something that mattered to them, whether that was a house move, a family matter, a Will or a problem in their business, and who then took the time afterwards to share how it went. That means a great deal to everyone here.

We read every review. The kind words are passed on to the solicitors and teams involved, and where someone tells us something could have been better, we listen and learn from it. It is one of the ways we keep improving how we look after people.

So to every client who has left feedback, on Google or elsewhere, thank you. It helps other people across East Sussex find a solicitor they can trust, and it means more to the team than you might think.

Location is often the deciding factor when buying a home, and for families a school catchment area can be the biggest draw of all.

It’s easy to see why finding a home near the school you have set your heart on feels like the perfect outcome, but school catchment areas are not guaranteed, as admissions criteria prioritise certain groups, including siblings, and the distance a school’s places extend each year depends on the number of families applying.

That is why it is worth checking the school's admissions policy and the local authority's own information directly, rather than relying on what an estate agent tells you. Your conveyancer cannot confirm a school place, but the searches carried out during the purchase will flag other things worth knowing, such as planning applications and flood risk.

In his latest article, Noel Martin, Partner in our Residential Conveyancing team, shares some practical points on location to weigh up before you commit, from commute times and parking to broadband and council tax bands.

When parents separate, the practical questions around children are often the ones that matter most day to day, and the ones that cause the most worry.

Where will the children live? How will time with each parent work? What happens if you cannot reach an agreement? These are not easy conversations to have, particularly while emotions are still raw.

Where parents cannot agree, a Child Arrangements Order can set out where a child lives, who they spend time with and whether other types of contact should take place.

Court proceedings are not always necessary, though, and for many families they are best avoided. Many parents are able to agree arrangements between themselves or with support such as mediation. Where agreement is not possible, getting legal advice early can help you understand the options, take some of the heat out of the situation and keep the focus on what is best for the child.

Our Family Law team will listen and explain your options in plain English, without judgement.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day, and it is a useful reminder that wellbeing at work matters every day of the year, not just on one 🧠

Working in law can be demanding. Deadlines, difficult conversations and supporting clients through some of the hardest moments of their lives can take a toll, and we think it is important to acknowledge that openly rather than expecting people to simply carry on.

At Stephen Rimmer, our wider health and wellbeing support includes a firm-wide Vitality Health policy with GP access, health checks and hospital cover, alongside eye care support. We also offer flexible working arrangements and generous annual leave.

Creating a supportive workplace is about more than benefits, though. It is about colleagues looking out for one another, managers who listen and a culture where it is alright to say when you are not okay.

Being asked to attend a police station voluntarily can sound less serious than being arrested, but a voluntary interview can still be conducted under caution.

It is understandable to feel anxious if you receive that request, and many people worry that asking for a solicitor makes them look as though they have something to hide. It does not... you are entitled to free legal advice at the police station, whether you have been arrested or invited to attend a voluntary interview under caution.

Having a solicitor with you means you can receive advice before and during the interview, understand what is happening at each stage and make informed decisions rather than feeling under pressure.

We provide 24/7 police station representation for people who have been arrested or asked to attend an interview under caution. If you or a family member needs help, at any hour, we are here.

A few weeks into the new school year, most families have settled back into a routine. For separated parents, though, the school run, uniform costs, homework and parents' evenings can all raise questions about who does what.

It is worth remembering that parental responsibility does not end when a relationship does. Where both parents have it, both are entitled to be involved in the bigger decisions about their child's education, and schools should treat both parents equally when sharing information, unless a court order says otherwise.

Many day-to-day frustrations can be avoided by talking things through in advance and putting the practical arrangements in writing. Where you cannot agree, keeping the focus on your child and considering mediation before anything more formal is usually the kinder and more constructive route.

In his latest article, Ben Bradshaw, Partner and Head of Family Law, looks at how co-parents can share school responsibilities in a way that works for everyone.

Losing someone is difficult enough without uncertainty over a Will or estate adding to the situation.

Disputes can arise over a Will, an inheritance or the way an estate is being administered, often at a time when families are already under strain. When that happens, understanding your legal position early can help you decide what steps are available and whether the issue can be resolved without lengthy court proceedings.

Sometimes it is a question of whether a Will truly reflects what the person wanted. Sometimes it is a worry that an executor is not doing what they should. Whatever the circumstances, it helps to talk it through with someone who deals with these situations regularly and will explain your options calmly and clearly.

Our contentious probate team advises on disputes involving Wills, inheritance claims and the conduct of executors and estate administrators.

Being handed a settlement agreement can feel unsettling, particularly if it arrives out of the blue.

If you are in that position, the first thing to know is that you do not have to sign it on the spot. A settlement agreement is a legally binding contract that brings your employment to an end in return for a payment or other benefits, and by signing it you give up the right to bring certain claims against your employer. That is why the law requires you to take independent legal advice before it can be valid.

It also helps to know that the terms are not always fixed. The amount offered, the wording of a reference and any confidentiality clauses can all be discussed and, in many cases, improved.

In his latest article, Jerome Soucek explains what a settlement agreement is, what to check before signing and how to approach the decision calmly rather than in a rush.

Completing a house purchase in five weeks is no small achievement, particularly when a sale needs to line up with it!

We were delighted to receive this feedback for Emily Reed, Conveyancing Executive in our Residential Conveyancing team in Eastbourne:

“Emily worked unbelievably hard to fight with English system of buying a house to completion in 5 weeks. Hence I was able to tie in my purchase with my sale. I cannot recommend the firm(ER) highly enough.”

Moving home can be one of the more stressful things people go through, and timing is often the biggest worry. Keeping things moving, chasing where needed and making sure clients know what is happening at each stage is something Emily and the wider team work hard to get right, so feedback like this is always appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to leave the review.
